Position Summary

A Researcher position is open in the lab of Dr. Yuhua Song, Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Our research group is recruiting a self-motivated Researcher to investigate small molecule therapeutic drug discovery and mechanism studies in Alzheimer's disease, cancer and other neurodegenerative diseases. Candidates are expected to have significant research experience in molecular and cell biological experiments and in vivo study. Research experience of In vivo study for Therapeutic Drug efficacy and mechanism studies in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disease are desirable. Research experience for dish-based clinical trials using iPSC technology for therapeutic outcome studies is also desirable. As a Researcher, this position will require you to play a key role in driving scientific discovery by independently leading and executing research projects. This professional-level position demands a high degree of expertise and judgment in designing studies, analyzing data, and may involve assistants in publishing findings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and contribute to grant writing and securing funding for future research. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens. Your role will also include assuming responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities that include mentoring junior staff, training new students, developing and documenting standard protocols, managing lab ordering, inventory, equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Our group also performs extensive computational biology research. The new Researcher will have the opportunity to work with colleagues in computational biology research and gain additional computational biology skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Research Leadership Scientific Discovery:

  2. Independently lead and execute research projects from concept through completion.

  3. Design and implement research studies using sound scientific methods.

  4. Analyze, interpret, and present research findings.

  5. Contribute to the preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts, reports, and presentations.

  6. Collaborate with internal and external research partners, investigators, and stakeholders.

  7. Project Management Funding Support:

  8. Manage research project timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

  9. Coordinate activities across cross-functional teams to ensure successful project execution.

  10. Assist with grant writing, proposal development, and funding applications.

  11. Support efforts to secure and maintain research funding for current and future projects.

  12. Laboratory Operations Staff Development:

  13. Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations and research activities.

  14. Mentor junior staff and provide guidance on research methodologies and best practices.

  15. Train new students and team members on laboratory procedures and protocols.

  16. Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and documentation.

  17. Laboratory Administration, Compliance Resource Management:

  18. Manage laboratory ordering, inventory, supplies, and equipment.

  19. Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment and resources.

  20. Ensure compliance with institutional, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  21. Work with research animals, specimens, and/or research collaborators as required by the specific research focus.

  22. Maintain accurate records and documentation to support research integrity and regulatory compliance.

  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $ 50,050- $65,065

Qualifications

Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor's degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required or High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Pharmacology, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or closely related life sciences field.

  • Master's degree and 1 year of experience.

  • Candidates with research experience in molecular and cell biological experiments and in vivo study are preferred.
