General Responsibilities:
The Senior Communications Manager provides strategic leadership for communications strategy and execution for a large unit. This role develops and oversees comprehensive communication plans, manages budgets and resources, and serves as a senior advisor to executive leadership. The Manager ensures that communications advance both unit and institutional priorities, maintain brand integrity, and achieve measurable outcomes across audiences and platforms. The Senior Communications Manager will assist school leadership in developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH), including designing and maintaining websites, social media sites, and printed collateral. To oversee a broad range of communications functions and ensure a consistent communications strategy for the school. May supervise staff.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Develops, implements, and oversees the production of high-quality, multi-channel content, ensuring messaging is consistent, strategic, and accessible. This may include web, email, social media, video, newsletters, and print publications.
2. Coordinates across School of Public Health (SOPH) departments to ensure consistent execution of the strategy.
3. Serves as the school's primary liaison to UAB's Office of Marketing and Communications, ensuring SOPH communications align with university brand standards and institutional priorities.
4. Supports strategic communications that strengthen awareness of the school's contributions to population health, scientific discovery, workforce development, and community partnerships.
5. Identifies opportunities that highlight the impact of the school's research, education, service, and partnerships for broad internal and external audiences.
6. Assists departments and programs across the school in communicating their successes, including faculty accomplishments, student achievements, and community impact. Identifies and develops storytelling opportunities that strengthen understanding of the school's mission and contributions.
7. Defines performance metrics and goals for communication initiatives, uses data analytics and reports to evaluate effectiveness and inform decision-making and strategy.
8. Serves as the lead creative/technical writer and editor for high-visibility school-level communications, including annual and other school-level reports/publications, accreditation-related publications, and recruitment, donor, and funder materials.
9. Provides editorial oversight and final review of communications products produced across the school.
10. Advises senior leadership on communication opportunities and challenges; collaborates with institutional partners to ensure alignment and amplification of messaging.
11. Represents the SOPH in institution-wide discussions and planning.
12. Provides vision and direction for communications within the unit, ensuring strategies support institutional goals, brand standards, and long-term reputation building.
13. Provides strategic guidance and oversight to SOPH employees, who manage the day-to-day social media content production and platform operations.
14. May manage staff and interns.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Pay Range: $70,425 – $114,440

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field, and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
