The University of Alabama System, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is receiving applications for the position of Deputy Secretary to The Board of Trustees and System Counsel ("Deputy"). This role will serve as Deputy Secretary to the governing board of the state's largest higher education enterprise, which includes three doctoral research universities and the UAB Health System. Assists and supports the Secretary of The Board of Trustees ("Secretary") in the discharge of duties and responsibilities relating to The Board of Trustees ("Board") and provides strategic and operational support to the Board. Will also serve as System Counsel under the direction of the General Counsel.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attends Board and Committee meetings and assists in making, recording, and retaining complete records and minutes of all official actions of the Board and its committees
  • Executes Board-related projects and initiatives to advance the Board's fulfillment of its fiduciary responsibilities
  • Assists the Secretary in overseeing and directing activities related to the Board
  • Collects, manages, and edits materials disseminated to the Board
  • Ensures agenda items to be considered by the Board comply with Board policy
  • Assists in drafting or revising Board policies and bylaws
  • In conjunction with the General Counsel and Secretary, advises campus and System leadership as well as the Board on best governance practices
  • In conjunction with the Vice Chancellor for System Communications, coordinates communication between campus and System leadership and the Board
  • In conjunction with the Secretary, serves as a liaison between The Board and the entities that comprise the University of Alabama System
  • Serves in the capacity of the Secretary in the Secretary's absence or as directed by the Secretary

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and influence at the most senior levels of the organization while working collaboratively, cooperatively, and strategically across all functions, levels, and departments
  • Strong attention to detail and professional demeanor
  • Experience providing executive advisory support and maintaining confidentiality in all interactions
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently under the direction of the Secretary and General Counsel

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD)
  • 5–10 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to serve effectively as a representative of The Board of Trustees
  • License and good standing to practice law in the State of Alabama
