Position Summary
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), IRCP Flow Cytometry and Single Cell Core Facility (FCSC), is recruiting a Research Scientist Specialist to join the core facility. The Research Scientist Specialist will perform cell sorting, analytic flow cytometry and imaging cytometry and will help supervise junior members of the Core. This position involves training users in instrument operation, panel building and data analysis. This position also involves consultation with users about their needs for cell sorting and then setting up the cell sorter appropriately to obtain the desired populations. This position also involves indirectly supervising activities like setting up daily schedules and assignments. The Research Scientist Specialist will schedule experiments, assign tasks, perform sorting, perform analytic flow cytometry, calibrate and test instruments, maintain records for billing.
General Responsibilities
A Research Scientist Specialist delves deeper into niche areas within their field, leading complex research initiatives and developing innovative methodologies. This role demands a higher level of expertise and independent judgment in experimental design and problem-solving. Specialists often mentor junior scientists, contributing significantly to strategic research directions and publishing influential findings. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Consultation with users for experimental design.
Performing cell sorting and analytic flow cytometry.
Assisting users with troubleshooting instruments.
Data transfer.
Maintaining records of experiments.
Developing and verifying antibody panels.
Preparing invoices and billing via the FBS system.
Indirectly supervising staff
Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $81,525- $105,980
Qualifications
Qualifications
Doctorate degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience OR Master’s degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences
Extensive experience with analytic flow cytometry and data analysis.
Some experience with cell sorting.
Experience with sterile techniques.
Experience in a biological science that uses flow cytometry.
Prefer a degree in a related biological science field
