Electrician – Campus Maintenance

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Position Summary

The Electrician supports UAB Facilities by performing skilled electrical work to install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot electrical systems across campus buildings and infrastructure. This role ensures the safe and reliable operation of electrical equipment, lighting, power distribution, and control systems in academic, research, clinical, and administrative environments. The Electrician follows established codes, safety standards, and UAB Facilities procedures while delivering high‑quality service that supports daily campus operations.

Essential Accountabilities:

· Maintains electrical equipment according to standard procedures, diagrams and/or manufacturer.

· Complies with all organizational guidelines, policies and procedures as well as related safety manuals and directives. Complies with all applicable federal, state and regulatory agency mandates: OSHA, EPA, ADEM, JCAHO, etc. Conforms to productivity standards as set forth in the American Hospital Association table of standards.

· Performs a variety of general to skilled maintenance procedures: alters and repairs machines, equipment and/or facilities; alters, maintains and repairs steam, gas, water, air and sanitary plumbing pipes and fixtures; repairs and replaces valves, repairs leaks and clears drains. Performs general welding; bends, cuts, reams and threads pipe. Performs routine maintenance duties: repairs extension cords; replaces fuses, fluorescent ballasts and tubes; cleans and lubricates motors; cleans sinks and grease traps; repairs drape pull mechanisms and related items.

· Services and repairs heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment: fans, motors, radiators, pumps, thermostats, dampers and regulating controls.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range:

$21.80 - $30.33 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications) (Commensurate with experience & qualifications), plus incentives current certifications: Electrician Master Card (upon hire)

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience.

· Preferred Qualifications:

· Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Electrical Systems, Electrical Technology, or a related field.

· Licensure Requirements:

o Currently licensed with a Journeyman Electrician Registration from the City of Birmingham

Independent Judgement/Problem Solving:

Carries out duties within the scope of University policies and procedures. Analyzes problems, adapts guidelines, and exercises independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that impact policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to the supervisor.

Customer Service Relationships:

Handles challenging customer situations with tact and diplomacy. Uses advanced interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships. Finds creative solutions to meet customer needs.

MVR (Motor Vehicle Record):

Driving record must meet University underwriting guidelines, including:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license

  • Minimum age of 21

  • At least three years of driving experience

  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Physical Requirements:

Must possess the physical ability, with or without mechanical assistance, to safely perform job duties, including:

  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

  • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.

· Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

· Working in confined spaces and extreme temperatures

· Working within extreme temperature ranges

Work Schedule:

Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the University and department.
