Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a PROGRAM DIRECTOR II to direct operations of a programmatic function. Operates with a high degree of independence. Responsible for program development, content and administration. Establishes program objectives, manages programmatic fiscal activities, supervises staff engaged in carrying out program activities and may require grant writing and/or other ability to secure program funding. Prepares various reports for program.

This individual is responsible for providing leadership and overall management of complex activities related to the work of the Senior Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (SADPDFA). This role is a strategic partner to the SADPDFA, driving the operational success of faculty and staff onboarding, retention, talent development, and professional growth initiatives within the School of Nursing. With minimal supervision and in a confidential and professional manner, this individual will demonstrate commitment to supporting best-practices in the design and implementation of activities related to the SON’s faculty and staff professional development and talent management enterprise. Using effective problem-solving, innovative thinking, attention to detail, effective planning, leadership, and positive communication, this individual oversees all processes related to the SADPDFA’s performance management portfolio. This role provides functional leadership and operational direction to administrative staff supporting the ACCC and FCHS departments. Leads workflow coordination, process standardization, and operational alignment across departments. Works collaboratively with Department Chairs, who retain formal supervisory authority, to provide performance input, identify development needs, and ensure consistent expectations, service levels, and execution of faculty affairs and professional development processes. Serves as the central point of coordination for administrative staff supporting faculty affairs operations. This individual may perform special assignments such as researching information, compiling reports, coordinating, tracking and editing special or regular projects and reports such as SON Annual Reports. This individual is directly responsible to the Senior Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs and will work collaboratively with other staff and faculty to direct and manage projects for the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Coordinates and directs all aspects of projects for the Office of SADPDFA, including the development of plans and timelines, facilitation and tracking of progress and outcomes, including special task force and committee work as directed by the SADPDFA.
2. Leads operational coordination of faculty lifecycle processes, including onboarding, annual evaluations, mentoring programs, reappointments, and development milestones. Ensures departmental administrative staff execute these processes consistently and in alignment with SADPDFA expectations. Oversees logistics, implementation, and evaluation of faculty and staff professional development programming.3. Plans initiatives and monitors progress in meeting strategic objectives and key outcomes on projects.
4. Develops, implements, and maintains standard operating procedures for faculty affairs and professional development processes. Monitors process adherence across departments, identifies operational gaps, and leads continuous improvement initiatives. Coordinates cross‑training and onboarding for administrative staff supporting faculty affairs functions.
5. Oversees faculty data management processes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and readiness for reporting, accreditation, and compliance needs.
6. Proactively prioritizes and initiates office projects in an efficient and effective manner, develops timelines, and monitors progress to achieve desired outcomes.
7. Manages multiple projects in an efficient and effective manner and provides written reports of progress on projects. Utilizes independent, critical thinking skills to provide solutions and answers for situations as they arise.
8. Independently prepares confidential correspondence, creates, establishes and/or maintains records, charts, graphs, spreadsheets, and databases. Experience in the use of project management software to track faculty development milestones and to support efficiency and productivity.
9. Composes official letters, presentations, and other formal communications as required by the SADPDFA. May handle sensitive or specialized correspondence with UAB administration, faculty, staff, and other constituents within confidentiality and core value perimeters of UAB.
10. Manages process review for the SADPDFA regarding but not limited to travel, , expenditure/budget management, and human resource compliance needs and concerns.
11. Identifies funding sources, collects, and manages data to prepare/assist in submitting grant proposals and reports for SADPDFA in collaboration with the SON grants development team. May conduct financial feasibility studies for SADPDFA
12. Participates in various meetings such as budget meetings, to provide financial status reports, and respond to requests for information and data efficiently.
13. Supports strategic planning for faculty affairs and professional development initiatives by conducting needs assessments, analyzing data, and preparing reports, dashboards, and recommendations for the Senior Associate Dean. Serves as the primary operational liaison between the SADPDFA office and Academic Affairs, HR, Faculty Affairs, Finance, Grants Development, and Compliance. Facilitates committees, task forces, and working groups related to faculty development, retention, and professional growth.
14. Represent the Senior Associate Dean to external and internal contacts as appropriate.
15. Provides functional leadership and operational direction to support staff for the Acute, Chronic and Continuing Care (ACCC) and Family, Community and Health Systems (FCHS) departments (e.g., co-ordinates mentor development, annual evaluation cycle, onboarding of faculty, special projects, as requested). Works collaboratively with Department Chairs, who retain formal supervisory authority, to provide performance input, identify development needs, and ensure consistent execution of faculty affairs and professional development processes across departments.16. Leads workflow coordination, process standardization, and operational alignment across the academic department support staff.
17. Provides functional direction, coaching, and performance input to Department Chairs.
18. Ensures consistent expectations, service levels, and operational practices across both departments.
19. Serves as the central point of coordination for administrative staff supporting faculty affairs processes. Other duties as assigned by the SADPDFA. Operates with a high degree of independence to direct the functions of the SADPDFA through leadership, development, and support of operations of the SON.

(Annual Salary: $60,835 - $98,855)

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Master’s degree in a Business or related field, and 5 years of leadership and related experience in program and project management, and/or professional development preferred. Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent project management qualification preferred. Preferred qualifications include experience providing functional leadership to administrative staff in a higher education environment, particularly within faculty affairs or academic administration. Experience developing and implementing operational systems, process improvements, and evaluation frameworks for faculty development or talent management initiatives is strongly desired.

This individual should possess strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as a commitment to excellence in design and delivery of professional and leadership development programs. Requires a high level of integrity, outstanding consultative skills and must be able to apply these skills with faculty and staff at all educational levels. Must be detail oriented, demonstrate excellent time management ability, and be able to effectively lead and execute SADPDFA projects and initiatives. The position requires the capacity to maintain confidentiality and adhere to UAB Human Resource guidelines and policies as well as other UAB and SON published policies, procedures and guidelines.
