Position Summary:
The Department of Student Housing and Residence Life serves over 3200 students who reside in 6 residence halls and over 2500 summer guests. UAB Campus Dining spans 15 food venues and over 200,000 square feet of service and preparation space. As part of the Student Housing and Dining Facilities team, this position is primarily responsible for conducting inspections of residential and dining spaces, completing student and staff work orders ranging from a variety of trades, including janitorial, sanitation, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire and life safety, and keys/security systems. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Student Housing and Dining Facilities.

General Responsibilities:
To perform skilled maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and minor construction within both the interior and exterior of the residence halls. To ensure facilities are properly maintained to meet UAB Student Housing standards. To assist in the training and acclimation of less-skilled employees in facilities maintenance trades. To perform routine assessment to ensure obligations of contracted vendors are being fulfilled to a satisfactory level. To assist management in identifying areas of improvement, project planning and preparation, identifying staff training needs, and inventory management. Duties may fall into a variety of trades, including janitorial, sanitation, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire, and life safety and keys/security systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Performs preventive maintenance throughout facilities. Assists management in planning and scheduling preventative maintenance work and special projects.
2. Maintains a variety of furniture within the residence halls. Assists in removal, relocation and repair/replacement of furniture as needed.
3. Performs service and preventative maintenance on a variety of small appliances and equipment within the residence halls. Troubleshoots equipment problems and identifies when appropriate for replacement.
4. Identifies repair and maintenance projects requiring the assistance of contractors or vendors; monitors work of vendors or contractors. Trains less-skilled staff in facilities maintenance trades; assists management to determine training needs for workgroup.
5. Maintains a broad working knowledge of materials, chemicals and equipment related to the maintenance of Student Housing facilities. Responds to university emergencies and closures including adverse weather to ensure that all facilities are protected and remain operational. Assists with tasks required in preparing to open facilities after closure, including snow and ice removal, systems and equipment checks, and start-up operations as assigned.
6. Knows and understands all safety procedures of the university and the Student Housing department. Trains less-skilled staff on safety procedures related to Student Housing operations. Assists in structural safety inspections. Operates departmental vehicles and is responsible for the safe operation and reporting any observed maintenance needs.
7. Maintains appropriate records and reports as needed.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range: $15.00 – $16.70

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required.
