RESEARCH HEALTH AND SAFETY LEAD

To conduct audits of facilities to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines regarding research health and safety and to serve as a lead auditor to perform advanced level duties when needed. To assist the Sr. Safety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer with project objectives and leads, trains, and supports other safety specialists as needed. To generate correspondence concerning the outcome of audits and provide corrective recommendations to the principle investigator. To maintain an ongoing audit database.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
· Conducts laboratory audits to assess compliance with current UAB policies and applicable regulatory agencies. Documents deviations from expectations and assists researchers and staff with corrective action plans.
· Coordinates audit schedules among applicable Research Safety staff and student interns to ensure inspections are completed according to the timeline assigned according to the laboratory hazard level.
· Supports the research safety program. Identifies training needs in the research community and assists in development and presentation of laboratory safety training modules and/or workshops. Assists with the development and delivery of training for student interns and cross-training Environmental Health and Safety (EH amp;S) staff.
· Assists the Sr. Safety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer with project objectives.
· Leads, trains, and supports other safety specialists.
· Supervises student interns and schedules their time between inspections, chemical inventory, and other lab safety projects.
· Summarizes inspection findings for reports to institutional safety committees.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $45,395 - $58,000
Qualifications
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Environmental or Occupational Health Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for educational experience.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
