Position Summary
The Instrument & Control Mechanic is responsible for installing, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining utility meters, HVAC, chiller, and boiler control systems and devices, including pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and direct digital control systems. This role ensures optimal performance of building automation systems and supports energy efficiency initiatives across university facilities.
Key Responsibilities
· Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot control systems (analog/digital), utility metering devices, and drive controllers using specialized testing equipment.
· Repair and modify control components such as valves, sensors, relays, thermostats, meters, and control panels to maintain system integrity.
· Analyze and document HVAC system performance, including airflow, pressure, voltage, and power factors; recommend repairs or upgrades.
· Test and install utility metering and sensing devices for steam, water, temperature, pressure, and humidity; develop control strategies for system optimization.
· Evaluate and recommend energy efficiency improvements, including testing new control products and retrofitting systems for conservation.
· Collaborate with engineers, architects, and energy managers to provide technical support and documentation for building automation projects.
· Perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited two-year vocational or technical school in Electronics, Electrical, or HVAC with a minimum of four (4) years of experience in building automation, electronic, or industrial controls.
Equivalent, relevant work experience may substitute for education requirements.
NICET Certification preferred.
Certifications
Valid State of Alabama driver’s license may be required based on departmental needs.
The driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicles in performance of university business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Technical Proficiency
· Ability to use industrial programmable logic controls and distributed control systems.
· Skilled in calibrating analog input transmitters
· Knowledge of HVAC control systems, electronics, and signal conversion.
Safety & Compliance
Problem Solving & Critical Thinking
Diagnose complex control system issues and recommend effective solutions.
Technology & Tools
Proficient in using testing/calibration instruments, and personal computers with related applications including Microsoft Office suite.
Communication & Collaboration
· Ability to work with architects, engineers, and building occupants to resolve technical issues.
Organizational & Leadership Abilities
· Independently manage tasks and prioritize workload to meet operational deadlines.
Project & Time Management
Plan and execute control system installations and modifications within project timelines.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to perform tasks requires standing, bending, lifting, and working in mechanical spaces.
· No patient contact; Category III for body fluid exposure.
Compensation and Benefits
· Starting Hourly Range: $22.90 – $33.57 hourly (commensurate with experience and qualifications).
