RESEARCHER V
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Description
Position Summary
A position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Rui Zhao in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for a Researcher V focused on stem cell and gene editing research. The Zhao Lab investigates the biology of stem cells and their applications in modeling and treating human diseases, with particular emphasis on cystic fibrosis and brain tumors. We use human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and organoid models, combined with gene editing approaches, to uncover disease mechanisms and develop novel gene and cell-based therapies. This is a professional-level research position requiring minimal supervision. The successful candidate will independently lead and execute research projects; design and perform experiments, analyze data, and present results in lab meetings; contribute to manuscript preparation and grant writing; mentor junior researchers and collaborate with other team members; serve as the lab contact for research collaborations.
To be responsible for the overall operation of the lab and to oversee projects within the lab.
To contribute to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.
To supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices and to manage lab equipment and supplies.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Independently design, conduct, and interpret experiments.
Culture and differentiate human iPSCs and generate organoid models. Keep lab notes and record.
Perform molecular biology and cell biology experiments, including plasmid construction, lentivirus production, flow cytometry, microscopy, and others.
Maintain accurate experimental records and laboratory documentation.
Organize lab reagents, cell lines, and shared research materials.
Assist in writing manuscripts, grant applications, and progress reports.
Perform routine lab maintenance (e.g., autoclaving, waste management)
Perform other duties as assigned.
