Engineering Manager – Campus Maintenance

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Description

Under general direction, this role oversees operations within the assigned area of responsibility. The incumbent is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring budgets, goals, and objectives; providing technical guidance, subject matter expertise, and problem resolution; and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as the individual “in responsible charge” of engineering work and will provide administrative support for both departmental and project-related activities. This position also includes supervisory responsibilities for subordinate personnel within the department.

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

· Applies extensive knowledge of engineering practices, principles, and scientific problem-solving methods.

· Oversees maintenance projects, renovations, and enhancements to campus infrastructure.

· Develops engineering designs and provides technical expertise to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

· Plans, implements, and monitors departmental budgets, goals, and objectives.

· Assists in formulating divisional strategies and implementing policies.

· Develops and executes engineering processes, communication strategies, and operational improvements.

· Manages supervisors and departmental employees, ensuring efficient workflow and strict adherence to safety protocols.

· Conducts interviews, recommends hiring decisions, oversees training, and evaluates performance.

· Works closely with architects, engineers, and university leadership to support campus-wide initiatives.

· Advises on disciplinary actions and provides employee guidance.

· Works closely with architects, engineers, and university leadership on campus-wide initiatives.

· Regularly attends departmental and project meetings, as well as other relevant conferences.

· Provides engineering-related expertise, training, and problem resolution across departmental activities.

· Prepares analyses, reports, and documentation for project and departmental administration.

· Evaluates employee performance and assigns work tasks to ensure efficiency.

· Investigates and advises the Executive Director on disciplinary actions as needed.

· Provides guidance and counseling to employees regarding disciplinary matters.

· Ensures ongoing compliance with UAB, State, and Departmental Purchasing procedures.

STARTING ANNUAL RATE OF PAY: $85,600.00 - $130,274.04 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

· Ability to provide leadership, counsel, and motivation while demonstrating commitment to departmental and organizational goals.

· Skilled in developing and executing action plans quickly in response to urgent or unexpected needs.

· Experience in budget administration and proficiency with a wide range of personal computer hardware and software, including Excel spreadsheets.

· Demonstrates experience in high-level decision-making to guide projects and resolve challenges.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills

· Ability to be available to receive calls on weekends, nights, and holidays on a regular and continuous basis.

· Strong interpersonal skills

· Ability to delegate tasks effectively

PERSONAL:

Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:

· Lifting, moving and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

· Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding and working at heights above thirty (30) feet

· Perform tasks requiring bending, standing long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

· Working in confined spaces

· Working within extreme temperature ranges
