Are you a skilled mechanic ready to play a crucial role in a dynamic, fast-paced healthcare environment? Join the UAB Facilities Hospital Maintenance team and help ensure the optimal functioning and safety of our facility. This position is vital to hospital operations, involving preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and rapid response to emergency requests to minimize the impact on patient services. The ideal candidate brings a combination of technical skills, attention to detail, and a deep commitment to customer service.
Key Responsibilities & Attributes:
Preventative & General Repair: Performs minor, routine maintenance and repairs on building structures, furnishings, and general equipment. This includes tasks such as replacing ceiling tiles, maintaining and replacing fire extinguishers, and performing other general repairs.
Work Order Management (FSI): Efficiently receives, manages, and completes work orders using the computerized maintenance software (FSI). This includes providing status updates and closing out work orders in a timely manner, while maintaining detailed, accurate service records.
Emergency Response: Serves as a first responder to urgent repair requests and equipment breakdowns, ensuring swift resolution.
Basic Technical Knowledge: A basic working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems is helpful for diagnosis and support, even though specialized tradespeople manage major work. Familiarity with hospital-specific equipment is a plus.
Safety & Compliance: Prioritizes the well-being of all personnel and visitors by adhering to all health, safety, and compliance regulations. Attends required departmental safety meetings and other meetings/training. Completes mandatory training in a timely manner.
Communication & Professionalism: Effectively coordinates with staff and maintains a professional demeanor when interacting with all personnel, patients, and visitors.
Punctuality and Reliability: Given the critical nature of hospital operations, reliability and punctuality are crucial for maintaining service continuity.
Physical Requirements: The ideal candidate should be in good physical condition to meet the job's physical requirements. The role is required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities to include:
· Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
· Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet
· Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings in the hospital
· Working in confined spaces
· Working within extreme temperature ranges
· Ability to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Compensation & Work Details:
Starting Offer Range: $17.00 - $23.00 per hour
Full Classification Range: $17.00 - $22.10 - $27.65
Determination: Offers are set based on relevant experience, internal equity, budget, and UAB salary guidelines.
Work Schedule: Must have flexibility due to on-call requirements.
Essential Personnel: This position is designated as essential personnel and is required to report to work during emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather), regardless of University closure. Employees should be prepared to travel to work during inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of their role in critical situations.
