Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an IMMIGRATION ADVISOR J-1 to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for international scholars (exchange visitors) by providing information and support on J-1 immigration status issues. To serve as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university's J-1 international exchange visitor program. To advocate for international scholars by assisting with administrative issues that interfere with the accomplishment of their research objectives. To serve as co-Training Program Liaison (TPL) with the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to onboard J-1 residents and fellows. To advise international scholars on matters of immigration compliance and university policy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Liaises with campus partners, administrators and others to determine appropriate immigration status for international scholars based on activity.

2. Serves as an ARO responsible for issuing initial, extension, and transfer Form DS-2019s and entering accurate information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), including assisting with timely SEVIS verification.

3. Advises J-1 exchange visitors on matters of accommodation, change in site of activity or funding source/level, and cultural adjustment and issues updated DS-2019s as needed.

4. Serves as co-TPL to upload documents necessary for the ECFMG to issue initial and extension DS- Page 2 of 3 2019s and travel signatures to J-1 residents and fellows.

5. Navigates and integrates information from multiple databases, file storage systems and software programs while adhering to FERPA.

6. Remains up-to-date on current issues and trends affecting the exchange visitor program, especially bulletins from the Department of State, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

7. Assists with international scholar orientation, workshops and other events.

8. Drafts and revises flyers, forms, e-newsletter content and web content.

9. Conducts daily correspondence with international scholars and UAB partners to answer questions regarding DS-2019 issuance, funding sources, scope of activity, extension needs, travel issues, arrival at UAB and orientation.

10. Helps compile data and reports, and presents information at UAB campus partner meetings, and/or state and regional international educator conferences as needed.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

(Hourly Rate: $16.00 - $24.03)

Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in International Studies, Pre-Law, Higher Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident and pass a background check every four years as required by federal regulations for certification as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
