INSTRUCTIONAL LABORATORY COORD-SPECIALIST-CAS

General Responsibilities:

To teach and coordinate upper-level chemistry laboratory courses, including direct instruction, grading, and curriculum development in collaboration with faculty. To prepare syllabi, manage course content on Canvas, and develop instructional materials to ensure alignment between lecture and lab experiences. To oversee stockroom operations, chemical inventory, and technical logistics for advanced lab courses. To support training of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants and students in the use of specialized instrumentation such as NMR, FTIR, and GC-MS.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches laboratory sessions in selected laboratory sequences, primarily upper-level instructional labs. Provides direct laboratory instruction for all upper division laboratory classes in the Department of Chemistry.

  2. Prepares course syllabi for all assigned laboratory sequences.

  3. Performs weekly stockroom preparation for each course and manages ordering and tracking of chemical inventory associated with the courses.

  4. Coordinates the technical and administrative operation of all upper division laboratories in the Chemistry Department, under the direction of faculty coordinators.

  5. Prepares instructional materials for weekly laboratory sessions.

  6. Closely collaborates with Chemistry faculty in curricular development.

  7. Coordinates the selection of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants for designated laboratories.

  8. Handles management and safe handling of chemical waste associated with the laboratory courses to ensure compliance with UAB Environmental Health and Safety policies and mandates.

  9. Develops and manages the course Canvas pages for all sections, including updates to shared content for the online sections of the introductory labs.

  10. Prepares, administers, and grades examinations and quizzes for assigned laboratories.

  11. Responsible for teaching selected laboratories and submitting student course grades.

  12. Develops innovative and relevant laboratory experiences as well as ensure lecture and laboratory content coordination. Maintains knowledge of relevant instructional content for advanced studies in upper-level chemistry courses.

  13. Assists with training of graduate students on the use of instrumentation used in the laboratory courses including NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, ICP-OES, and UV-vis.

  14. Assists with training of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in the upper-level courses using instructional methods appropriate for advanced studies in physical/inorganic/analytical chemistry.

  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay Range: $50,050 – $81,330

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field and one (1) year of related experience. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
