The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) welcomes applications for a strategic leader with experience in a large, complex organization and a proven record of collaboration, policy development, and high-level management.
Reporting directly to UAB President Ray Watts, the Vice President-Administration is committed to balancing the needs of the University’s administrative functions with strong advocacy for its primary missions of instruction, research, patient care and community engagement. As a member of the President’s Cabinet, this role participates in the development of University policies and objectives, counsels the President and other executive officers on administrative matters, and provides administrative planning and implementation consistent with the goals and objectives established by the President and Board of Trustees.
The Vice President-Administration oversees the areas of Government Relations, Human Resources, Public Safety (Police), and Title IX, and provides guidance and input as a secondary line of report for Compliance and Risk Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet for all major decisions affecting the University.
- Provides information and counsel to the President and other executive officers on administrative matters related to University wide planning, policy and procedures.
- Maintains awareness of political activities, current and proposed legislation, changing economic and demographic environment and overall business climate affecting the University and relates this insight to the changing needs of the University consistent with its mission.
- Represents the University in interaction with internal operating units, as well as outside civic, regulatory and accrediting agencies. Serves as chief business spokesperson to other University personnel, Board of Trustees, local government and community, state agencies and other educational and non-educational institutions.
- Performs program planning and policy determination for areas of responsibility.
- Supervises subordinate senior officers and directors in the development of objectives, new programs, goals, forecasts, plans and budgets and ensures same are adhered to and administered. Ensures University policies are uniformly disseminated, properly interpreted, and administered.
- Develops, secures approval of and establishes operating policies consistent with President’s broad policies and objectives, and ensures execution of same.
- Performs direct supervision of senior officers and department directors and office support personnel. Interviews, hires, develops, counsels, directs, disciplines and, when necessary, discharges subordinate personnel.
- Counsels subordinate senior officers and department heads regarding resolution of employee relations matters within their areas of responsibility.
- Responsible for the planning and implementation of administrative computing systems that support the human resource operations of the University.
- Supports, from an administrative perspective, the University’s risk and compliance program and the work of the Office of the Compliance & Risk Assurance.
- Responsible for general campus safety through direct supervision of the UAB Police Department and the UAB Emergency Management Office, ensuring a safe and secure environment on campus. Serves on standing and ad-hoc committees in support of UAB programs and activities.
