Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Ophthalmology, is seeking a skilled Researcher III. The new Lewis Lab studies the biology of vision and the pathophysiology of visual disease in animal models. We are currently seeking a dedicated and motivated Researcher. This is an excellent opportunity to work in an exciting research environment while learning and perfecting laboratory skills. This position is responsible for independently maintaining mouse colonies, including genotyping, and supporting other lab researchers in conducting phenotypic characterization of these animals. This position is ideal for a new graduate seeking experience in research and/or planning a graduate, medical or veterinary school career in the future.
General Responsibilities
- As directed, to independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
- To collect, enter, summarize and analyze data.
- To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
- To develop and improve techniques for the lab.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain mouse colonies, including their genotyping.
- Mouse genotyping using PCR, mouse colony maintenance, mouse colony record keeping, etc.
- Conduct, analyze and troubleshoot experiments independently or under supervision. Assist in setting up the lab with new equipment, reagents and supplies.
- Review literature to stay on top of new scientific developments and obtain information to assist in new experimental design and optimizing protocols.
- Participate in weekly lab meetings and discuss data with the Principal Investigator.
- Dependent on specific features of ongoing projects, examples of other duties include but are not limited to: DNA cloning, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, tissue processing for electron microscopy, and/or processing samples for mass spectrometry.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Salary Range: $35,570 - $59,800

Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor s degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences
- Bachelor's Degree (BA, BS, etc.) in a science field (biology, chemistry, etc.)
- Experience working with mice or other animals.
- Experience with and of the following: genotyping, DNA cloning, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, tissue processing for electron microscopy are all preferred.
- Experience maintaining mouse colonies, including their genotyping
