The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of General Internal Med & Population Science, is seeking a is seeking a Scientist II. Projects may focus on topics of considerable scope and complexity, e.g., chronic disease disparities, COVID-19, social determinants of health, and may involve collaboration with academic and community partners from around the US. Collaborates in the analysis and reporting of results, including published manuscripts and scientific presentations.

- To plan, design, and conduct research and present findings.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Designs and implements research protocols and projects, advanced analytical techniques and the modification and extension of theories and practices in innovative research projects in field or specialty. Develops statistical and observational models. Independently, or in collaboration, conceives of increasingly complex research projects or training programs, writes grant applications and carries projects to completion.
- Operates and maintains sophisticated equipment to conduct research, analyze data and report research findings. May instruct others in use of equipment.
- Applies diversified knowledge of scientific research principles, practices and protocols in research projects. May make recommendations and conclusions that serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area.
- Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application and reporting of research projects. Teaches and advises on techniques. May require education and/or training work and may include developing intramural training symposia, mentoring undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
- Supplies technical leadership and consultation to professional co-workers, collaborations and graduate students.
- Prepares grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities.
- May manage and/or oversee a research laboratory.
- Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment and/or systems.
- Designs and implements small independent research studies in focused areas related to health disparities, health equity, and social determinants of health.
- Coordinates work of research project staff.Scientific Research/Training Development and Writing Advises and collaborates with faculty and independent scientists to develop research projects, grant proposals, and manuscripts related to health disparities, health equity, and social determinants of health.
- Prepares grant proposals to obtain funding for research projects and training/education programs.
- Serves as proposal coordinator and lead writer in the preparation of large-scale grant applications, e.g. research center or multi-institution proposals.
- Maintains current knowledge on health disparities- and health equity-related topics. Coordinates work of scientific writing staff.
- Directs the Research Program of the UAB Minority Health Health Disparities Research Center.
- Serves as research spokesperson and as a subject-matter expert on health disparities and social determinants of health for the MHRC.
- Leads the scientific efforts of the annual Health Disparities Research Symposium (theme and speaker selection; review of submitted paper and poster presentations; organization of paper and poster session themes and groupings).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary Range $74,100.00 - $120,700.00
Qualifications
- Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience
- OR M.D. and Master's degree and two (2) years of related experience
- OR Master's degree and six (6) years of related experience
- OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of related experience
