Are you ready to join a growing team? We are seeking a detail-oriented Sterile Supply Equipment Technician to join our maintenance team. Under direct supervision, you will be responsible for inspecting, testing, and maintaining central sterile equipment and machinery within clinical and support areas. Your role will ensure the safe operation and effective performance of our equipment through established quality control and maintenance programs.

Key Responsibilities:

I. Equipment Inspection & Maintenance:

Performs routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on central sterilization equipment. This includes operating, cleaning, adjusting, tightening, and lubricating electrical and mechanical equipment, plumbing systems, and building fixtures.

II. Safety & Performance Monitoring:

After each usage, inspects and tests equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and usage schedules. Ensures equipment operates safely and efficiently. Assists with user training on equipment operation.

III. Calibration & Troubleshooting:

Supports senior technicians with calibrations and monitors equipment for malfunctions. Ensures all sterilization equipment meets prescribed standards and safety guidelines.

IV. Inventory Management:

Assist in maintaining an inventory of parts required for the upkeep of central sterilization equipment. Track and document inventory, usage, and service records.

V. Compliance & Documentation:

Adhere to departmental policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Document all maintenance activities, service records, and equipment inventories accurately.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years related preventative maintenance, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing experience, as well as experience using hand and power tools and troubleshooting and problem-solving required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Associate's degree from a vocational/technical school or community college and/or experience working in a healthcare facility preferred. Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Starting Rate: $20.80 - $29.00 (Starting rates are based on our Compensation Guidelines, taking into consideration total relevant, verifiable experience (UAB/UAB Medicine and outside experience), grade minimum, internal equity, and pay ranges).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience troubleshooting steam, water, and pneumatic process control and PLC systems
  • Ability to perform pipefitting methods
  • Basic plumbing and electrical skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Maintenance knowledge of steam autoclaves and instrument washers
  • Knowledge of safety standards and guidelines (Joint Commission, Manufacturer)
  • Strong technical, mechanical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • General knowledge of the following: principles and methods of sterilization, steam generators, and industrial controls
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish, and maintain, effective working relationships with guest, contractors, customers, management, and staff
  • Ability to work efficiently independently, productively, and with minimal supervision
  • Attention to detail skills
  • Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities
  • Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization techniques
  • Ability to maintain a clean work site and area that minimally interferes with operations
  • Ability to work an on-call work schedule
  • Knowledge of safety standards and guidelines (The Joint Commission, Manufacturer)
  • Knowledge of diagnostic test equipment, volt-ohm meters, amp probes & precision temperature and pressure calibration equipment

  • Ability to utilize communication devices to read and respond to texts, emails, and service requests
  • Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator and other personal protective equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), to include:

o Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds

o Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet

o Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings in the Hospital

o Working in confined spaces

o Working within extreme temperature ranges

Work Schedule and On-Call Requirements: Incumbent must have flexibility due to on-call requirements. Position is designated as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, regardless of the University’s closure. Employees should be prepared to travel to work during inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of their role in critical situations.
