Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Psych - Behavioral Neurobiology, is seeking a Scientist I. The candidate will be expected to be a leader and teacher for the lab. They will serve an integral role in teaching undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in various techniques and protocols. They will be a key exemplar of maintaining a collegial, fun-spirited, and rigorous scientific environment. The candidate should embrace a team-oriented approach where the assignment of credit is less important than the overall group achieving its goals. The individual should enjoy the scientific process of discovery. They will be expected to independently plan and carry out experiments, analyze data, perform statistical analysis, and graphically prepare data for manuscripts and grants. They should be comfortable learning new techniques and technologies and establishing formalized protocols for an entire research group.
General Responsibilities
- To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
- To plan, coordinate and conduct research.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists the PI and help oversee various lab management tasks like training, safety, compliance, maintenance of equipment, and ordering.
- Oversees projects within the laboratory and assumes responsibilities for the day to day operation of lab activities.
- Supervises lab equipment and supplies.
- Uses advanced knowledge of lab practices to direct and teach others.
- Contributes significantly to the planning/design of studies.
- Collects, enters, summarizes, analyzes and interprets data.
- When studies are complete, this person will proactively begin writing manuscripts and preparing figures.
- Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, develops modifications and provides data to management
- Contributes to grant proposals and assists in the preparation and editing of grant applications.
- Organization and maintenance of a mouse colony including databasing and serving as a liaison for genotyping services.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Annual Salary Range $63,125.00 - $103,700.00
Qualifications
- Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
- OR M.D. and Master's degree.
- OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience
- OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience
Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences
- Experience and comfortable in a basic science laboratory setting.
- Experience in systems/behavioral and/or molecular neuroscience methodologies and a working knowledge of neuroscience concepts.
- Experience with mice, histology, stereotaxic surgery, animal behavior, fluorescence in situ hybridization, microscopy, bioengineering.
- Excellent communicator with other members of the lab and help prepare written summaries of research for publications and grants or standard operating procedures.
