Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care, is seeking a Researcher V. Under the supervision from PI and others, the successful candidate will perform experiments focusing on stem cell research in vitro and lead a project(s) with other staff scientists. Particularly, the candidate will take a lead on animal studies in the lab, including study set up, institutional approval, survival surgery in rodents, and live animal imaging. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to stem cell research and apply techniques including adult stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture and differentiation, gene editing in vitro and in vivo. The specific techniques include, but not limited to, cell culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, DNA/RNA/protein extraction and quantification, histology, microscopy. Applicants must have a PhD degree in science related field upon starting the position.
General Responsibilities
- To be responsible for the overall operation of the lab.
- To oversee projects within the lab.
- To contribute to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.
- To supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices.
- To manage lab equipment and supplies.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
- Contributes to planning/design of studies.
- Collects, enters, summarizes and analyzes data.
- Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications.
- Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
- Leadership of the assigned project(s).
- Contributes to other projects through assisting trainees (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, graduate students) and faculty in the lab.
- Performs experiments focusing on stem cell research in vitro and lead a project(s) with other staff scientists.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary Range $49,004.80 - $72,252.40
Qualifications
- Doctorate in a related field and one (1) year of related experience
- OR Master's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience
- OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and five (5) years of related experience
Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

- Ability to work with high degree of independence, frequently uses discretion and independent judgment in the design and execution of tasks.
- Ability to work as a team and with a diverse group of people, and to supervise lab operations and junior staff and trainees.
- Expertise in small animal handling and survival surgery.
