Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Researcher III candidate to perform translational research and epidemiology projects. This is a research position with a clinical microbiology focus. This position is perfect for someone with a background in the clinical laboratory setting who is looking for a change of pace and experience in research. In this position you will handle clinical samples for research purposes and aid in clinical research studies for novel clinical diagnostic platforms. In addition, you will be trained in other areas of microbiology such as bacteriophage processing, next generation sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.
  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine and complex molecular and culture-based microbiology technical procedures using aseptic technique and functions according to standard operating procedures.
  2. Assists in training of specific techniques as part of collaboration efforts.
  3. Collects, enters, and summarizes data.
  4. Analyzes data using basic statistics as related to clinical and research related projects.
  5. Organizes and maintains a biorepository of clinical isolates used for research studies.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Salary Range $17.10 - $28.31

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Previous microbiology experience or molecular diagnostic experience is preferred.
