The regional reporter is responsible for covering their beat across Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana for the Gulf States Newsroom, filing stories regularly for NPR and local stations, when needed. To report features on their beat. To develop a robust source list and stay on top of breaking news. To stay in touch with NPR editors about upcoming coverage. To regularly produce series and long-form stories. To assist local station reporters with audio production and writing. To pitch local stories to editors at NPR and other national programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Pitch, plan, report and produce feature and enterprise stories for all platforms, including broadcast, digital and social media.
• Develop a robust source list and stay on top of breaking news.
• Records, gathers and identifies sound elements to produce rich and memorable audio experiences
• Stay on top of breaking news and current events within the beat and meet deadlines.
• Remain responsive and flexible in the face of the demands of programming.
• Communicate clearly with stations across three states
• Maintain regular communication NPR desks and shows and pitch local stories to editors at NPR and other national programs.
• Participate in network topic team meetings when relevant
• Plan logistics of overnight and out-of-state reporting trips
• Represents the Gulf States Newsroom in public forums, community events and gatherings as needed.
• Attend and support events at the station in the state where they are based.
• Conduct regular station visits and attend conferences.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $52,555 - $55,000

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
