Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Ophthalmology, is seeking a Researcher II. The new Lewis Lab studies the biology of vision and the pathophysiology of visual disease in animal models. This is an excellent opportunity to work in an exciting research environment while learning and perfecting laboratory skills. This position is responsible for independently maintaining mouse colonies, including genotyping, and supporting other lab researchers in conducting phenotypic characterization of these animals. Dependent on specific features of ongoing projects, examples of other duties include but are not limited to: DNA cloning, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, tissue processing for electron microscopy, and/or processing samples for mass spectrometry. This position is ideal for a new graduate seeking experience in research and/or planning a graduate, medical or veterinary school career in the future.

General Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision:

  • To set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter and summarize data.
  • To monitor results and report unusual outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Maintains mouse colonies, including their genotyping.
  2. Conducts, analyzes, and troubleshoots experiments independently or under supervision.
  3. Assists in setting up the lab with new equipment, reagents and supplies.
  4. Maintains lab records for annual review and chemical records.
  5. Reviews literature to stay on top of new scientific developments and obtain information to assist in new experimental design and optimizing protocols.
  6. Participates in weekly lab meetings and discuss data with the Principal Investigator.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Salary Range $15.50 - $23.51

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Ability to work with mice is required.
