Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Biology is seeking a Researcher III.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.

To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.

To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.

To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provide animal husbandry for rodents (rats/mice).
  2. Develop and improve techniques in use in the lab
  3. Make daily observations, including feeding, watering, weighing and providing environmental enrichment to animals housed in multiple facilities.
  4. Monitor experimental results, detect, and report unusual outcomes
  5. Receive animals and supplies from vendors, organize proper housing for the animals
  6. Store supplies according to established standard operating procedures.
  7. Set up animal matings, including ensuring correct mating schemes, documenting and maintaining accurate records on parents and offspring, separating weanlings into new cages. Update and maintain colony database regularly.
  8. Other duties include rodent restraint, ear tagging, collecting biological samples, and maintaining laboratory and support equipment.
  9. Assist in setting up and performing behavior tests on animals and maintain proper documentation of experimental records.
  10. Instruct other lab personnel in techniques.
  11. Perform basic statistical analyses and use graphing software.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Hourly Salary Range $17.10 - $22.26

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

Experience in animal handling preferably with mice or rats.

  • Some knowledge of behavior tests.
  • Blood, fecal and tissue collection.
  • Experience with physiological and molecular techniques.
  • Experience with animal dissections.
