DIRECTOR RESIDENCE LIFE & SECOND YEAR EXPERIENCE
This position is responsible for the student experience, community development, and well-being of all first year and second-year students on campus. The oversight to effect this includes, but is not limited to, facilitation of a residential curriculum, learning communities for campus residents, a robust Second Year Experience to engage second-year students both on and off campus, participation in campus Care Team, collaboration with Offices of Community Standards and Student Accountability, Student Assistance and Support, Student Health and Wellness, Student Counseling, Title IX, Student Involvement and Leadership and other areas within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs.
Key Duties and Primary Responsibilities:
- Plans, develops, and coordinates a residence life program designed to engage students and stakeholders in the on-campus living community. Includes inter/intra-departmental collaboration
- Works to maintain effective relationships with departments within Student Affairs to provide students with the highest level of service. Represents resident student and department interests on various interdisciplinary committees and work groups
- Provides direction, strategic planning, and guidance to the SYE for all second-year students at UAB both off and on campus – and the Living Learning Communities within Student Housing
- Facilitates outreach to residents experiencing academic hardship, as reported through the early alert module, to ensure that residents are aware of resources and support to overcome barriers to student success in the classroom
- Supervises staff and provides direction and support for staff development, including recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and ongoing staff development for student responsiveness, quality service, and effective communication
- Primary responsibility on campus for attracting and retaining diverse student populations within the residence halls (e.g., first-time freshmen, transfer students, and upperclassmen) both to Student Housing and the University
- Interprets, enforces, and systematically reviews policies and procedures necessary to provide a safe and secure living environment on campus. Serves as the primary conduct officer within student housing. Trains other Residence Life staff, as needed, to hear, adjudicate, and resolve student housing conduct violations. Works cooperatively with the Office of Community Standards and Student Accountability and the Office of Student Assistance and Support
- Provides initial emergency response, including for students in crisis, behavioral issues, wellness, and general student safety, within the residence halls. Participates in campus-wide crisis response for students living on campus
- Coordinates annual Residence Life program assessment and reporting for the campus. Maintains data for reporting purposes and record keeping. Ensures compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and laws
- Responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on policy and procedure adaptations for special circumstances related to emergencies, students in crisis, business, service, and operational changes, as well as best practices in student support
- Performs other duties as assigned
Salary Range: $75,000-$90,000 (Salary commensurate with experience)
Qualifications
Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
- Interested candidates must have at least five years of progressive Student Housing and Residence Life experience and a strong foundation in Student Development Theory
- Demonstrated effectiveness in overseeing a robust residence life program, managing multiple professional and student staff levels, budgeting, strategic planning, program and outcomes assessment, and crisis response and recovery
- The ability to shift priorities quickly and make sound decisions with limited information is essential to be successful in this position
- Demonstrated experience and ability to navigate periods of intense focus related to student distress, staff morale, emergency management, and conflict resolution while maintaining efficiency in daily or routine tasks is critical
- A strong skillset in the curation of student support data, reporting, and providing summary analytics is integral to the position
