Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Preventive Medicine, is seeking a Scientist I. The Scientist I will provide support and assistance to faculty in the preparation of proposals for funding (primarily focused on the observation, prevention, and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases in clinical and community settings), including writing, editing, and creation of graphics and infographics.

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, coordinate and conduct research.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides input on the scientific approach and methods described in project proposals.
  2. Assists with refinement of the presentation of scientific ideas and review grant application narratives to ensure each proposal communicates a compelling vision/concept.
  3. Provides assistance in development and preparation of documents in support of grant applications.
  4. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and sponsor requirements in developing proposals.
  5. Assists faculty in using available enterprise-wide resources to locate funding mechanisms.
  6. Provides writing and editing support to assist faculty with the preparation of grant proposals focused on clinical and community studies for the prevention and management of cardiometabolic conditions, including writing, editing, and creation of tables, figures, graphics and infographics.
  7. May provide refinement of the presentation of scientific ideas and edit grant application narratives to communicate a compelling vision/concept.
  8. Assists faculty with proposal revisions based on comments from peer reviewer and editors and with drafting responses to peer reviewers and editors.
  9. Writes, revises, and edits drafts of executive summaries, conclusions and organizational credential for grants proposals.
  10. Improves proposal-writing results by coordinating with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Panels Program and other such efforts across campus, including developing presentations and seminars on research development related topics such as proposal development, searching for funding, writing processes and composition skills.
  11. Develops and maintains other resources to assist faculty in the development of grant applications, such as libraries of boilerplate text for use in applications.
  12. Gathers and analyzes data on outreach effectiveness and recommends improvements to extend reach and participation.
  13. Assists faculty in using available enterprise-wide resource to locate funding mechanisms.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range $63,125.00 - $103,700.00

Qualifications

Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience

OR M.D. and Master's degree.

OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience

OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Experience in behavioral/social science and public health research and a firm grasp of scientific methods.
  • Electronic database searching skills.
  • Content knowledge of cardiometabolic disease and health disparities preferred.
