Responsible for administratively managing a University department under the general direction of a functional Program Director or under the auspices of a Program Advising Committee and according to an established program plan. May participate in the development of program objectives and is responsible for achieving objectives within defined parameters set by University and/or department policies and procedures or technical principles. May require fiscal management of grants and other funds. May manage multiple programs. Requires the use of independent judgment to determine the best approach to accomplish objectives established in the program plan. May supervise staff as needed.

  1. Provide graduate students and post-docs with career counseling and coaching, CV/resume critiques, and job search strategies.
  2. Administer career assessment instruments as needed by trainees and assist in the university wide NIH mandate for Individual Development Plans (IDP).
  3. Deliver career advice with the intent to prepare trainees for both academic and non-academic careers to be demonstrated by increased enrollment in credit-bearing coursework and free offerings of the OPE and OPSEL.
  4. Encourage shared OPE and OPSEL career initiatives and effectiveness through contributing to the career advising body of knowledge and participation in national organizations and meetings.
  5. Create and present career specific initiatives for Graduate Career Development; plan and organize events and workshops to incorporate employers and alumni in career initiatives.
  6. Serve as liaison to the academic community, providing information about the pursuits of graduates in their disciplines, workplace trends and market changes.
  7. Increase the visibility of the OPE and Graduate School to the industry by planning and implementing a wide range of outreach strategies, marketing, and communications initiatives. Identify potential employers and build and facilitate connections for graduate students/alumni.
  8. Develop appropriate internship and experiential opportunities for graduate students; maintain and enhance connections with alumni willing to provide career advice, through visits and phone/email contact.
  9. Build constituent relationships across campus for graduate students and post docs with colleagues in the professional schools, graduate faculty and departmental staff; upon request, participate in committees and task forces designed to improve the quality of career services to trainees.
  10. Provide curriculum content for professional development workshops and courses including academic and non-academic job searches, networking, CV and resume writing, and interviewing in coordination with the Office of Professional Skills and Experiential Learning.
  11. Maintain content and resources for employment information e.g., job posting sites, web resources.
  12. Develop procedures to effectively evaluate career development programs and services for graduate and postdoctoral trainees.
  13. Survey trends and challenges at similar institutions and make informed recommendations for programming.
  14. Serve as website administrator for the Office of Postdoctoral Education, and MERIT programs.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned

Annual Salary Range: $41,175 - $60,000


Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
