Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Researcher III in Behavioral Neurobiology. This position conducts laboratory research in the field of neuroimmunology and psychiatry under the direct guidance of the principal investigator (Shinichi Kano). The position provides ample opportunities to acquire new knowledge/skills for career development as a professional researcher. A highly motivated individual is sought to work as a full-time or part-time lab manager in the Kano lab at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (https://sites.uab.edu/kanolab/). The lab investigates CNS immunology and homeostasis in health and disease by using multidisciplinary neurobiology, immunology, and translational neuroscience approaches. Current projects include but are not limited to 1) Molecular communications between glial cells during development and their relevance to neuropsychiatric disorders, and 2) Modulation of brain development and function by the immune system.

General Responsibilities

As directed:

  • To independently set up and perform experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, and analyze data.
  • To monitor results, detect and report unusual outcomes and suggest modifications.
  • To develop and improve techniques for the lab.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  2. Develops and improves techniques for the lab.
  3. Maintains essential lab resources, particularly rodent colonies. Will work with live rodents (mice).
  4. Performs sample preparation, runs assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.
  5. Performs other miscellaneous research-related duties as assigned.
  6. Contributes to planning/design of studies.
  7. Collects, enters, summarizes and analyzes data.
  8. Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications.
  9. May assist in planning long or short term goals/fiscal management.
  10. Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range $35,570.00 - $59,800.00 Annually

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Degree in Neurobiology, Immunology, Biomedical science, Biomedical engineering, Biology or related program
