FINANCIAL OFFICER I

General Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key contributor to the financial integrity and operational stability of the assigned unit by applying established principles of accounting, financial analysis, and budget management.

  • Supports informed decision-making through consistent evaluation of financial activity, reliable reporting practices, and adherence to institutional policies.

  • Strengthens fiscal operations by maintaining effective financial systems, coordinating with University stakeholders, guiding departmental personnel, and ensuring alignment with broader organizational standards.

  • Contributes to the responsible use of financial resources and fosters continuity across financial, administrative, and vendor-related processes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • May make decisions regarding the use of financial resources. Provides financial guidance to assigned staff and appropriate University personnel and coordinates integration with University accounting system.

  • Uses knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures specific to accounting, financial analysis and budgetary processes.

  • Manages assigned departmental accounts and provides ongoing financial analysis of departmental accounting functions.

  • Assures proper accounting for state, grant, contract and/or revenue accounts as assigned.

  • Provides analysis of gross expenditures and makes recommendations for maintaining fiscal stability.

  • Assists in developing and administering budgets. Provides fiscal and budgetary services to an assigned unit.

  • May establish and maintain financial management databases and systems which conform to standard accounting practices.

  • Monitors adherence to financial policy and procedure. Develops and provides financial statements and reports to upper management on regular or requested basis.

  • May supervise departmental accounting operations and activities which could include approval and processing of disbursement and internal requisitions.

  • May prepare and/or supervise processing of departmental personnel action forms and as well as assume some payroll duties. Acts as liaison with appropriate University financial staff.

Additional Duties

  • Monitors adherence to financial policy and procedures.

  • Develops and provides financial statements and reports to the supervisor and/or upper managers on a regular or as-requested basis.

  • Provides financial guidance to assigned staff and appropriate University personnel and coordinates integration with University accounting systems.

  • Uses knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures specific to accounting, financial analysis and budgetary processes.

  • May establish and maintain financial databases and systems that conform to standard accounting practices.

  • May prepare and process departmental personnel action forms and maintain database accuracy.

  • Acts as liaison with appropriate University financial staff.

  • Assist with managing assigned departmental accounts and provide ongoing financial analysis of departmental accounting functions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred

  • Hard Skills: Financial management expertise, accurate data entry, and the ability to interpret, analyze, and execute complex financial data and related personnel actions.

  • Soft Skills: Being detail-oriented, team collaboration, and resourcefulness.

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or a related field and two years of related experience required.

  • Preferred experience with UAB Oracle Systems, finance, and administrative roles.

Additional Qualifications:

  • The individual must be organized and able to coordinate multiple projects, applying core accounting and budgeting principles.

  • The position may prepare and/or process departmental personnel action forms and assume some payroll duties.

  • Acts as a liaison with appropriate University administrative staff.

Salary Range: $43,890-$71,320

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required.

  • Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
