Project Manager-Facilities Electrical Engineer

General Responsibilities:
Coordinates and manages the planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout of major capital construction, renovation, infrastructure, utility, and building systems projects. Responsible for delivering assigned projects safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with scope, quality, and operational requirements. This position is a Project Manager role requiring an experienced Electrical Engineer to lead projects involving campus electrical distribution systems, power monitoring and control systems, emergency and standby power systems, grounding and lightning protection systems, and building automation and control systems. The position may also manage other technically complex infrastructure, utility, and multidisciplinary projects as assigned.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Provides overall project management for assigned capital construction, renovation, infrastructure, utility, and building systems projects, including planning, scope development, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, design coordination, construction administration, commissioning, occupancy, and project closeout.
2. Coordinates project activities among users, building administrators, Facilities personnel, consultants, contractors, utility providers, public safety representatives, and other stakeholders to minimize disruption and ensure successful project delivery.
3. Develops and administers project budgets, schedules, contracts, bid documents, specifications, and project controls; monitors project performance and implements corrective actions as necessary to achieve project objectives.
4. Serves as the primary point of contact for assigned projects and maintains project documentation, including project records, reports, meeting minutes, drawings, and financial information.
5. Conducts site visits and inspections to evaluate project progress, confirm compliance with contract requirements, identify risks, and facilitate timely resolution of issues.
6. Applies professional electrical engineering judgment in evaluating existing conditions, technical alternatives, design documents, equipment selections, studies, submittals, testing, commissioning activities, and construction-related issues.
7. Manages projects involving electrical power distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, substations, feeders, power monitoring and control systems, emergency and standby power systems, grounding and lightning protection systems, and building automation and control systems.
8. Provides electrical engineering consultation, technical guidance, and design reviews for capital projects managed by other project managers.
9. Coordinates planned outages, cutovers, temporary power systems, construction phasing, and contingency measures for work in occupied, research, healthcare, and mission-critical facilities.
10. Ensures compliance with applicable codes, regulatory requirements, safety standards, UAB design and construction standards, and project procedures, including commissioning, testing, turnover, and operational readiness.
11. Supports the development, implementation, and maintenance of UAB design and construction standards.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program and five (5) years of relevant experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
• Advanced knowledge of building and campus electrical distribution systems, power monitoring and control systems, emergency and standby power systems, grounding, lightning protection systems, and building automation and control systems.
• Knowledge of project management principles and practices, including project planning, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, construction administration, contract management, risk management, change management, commissioning, and project closeout.
• Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, Joint Commission requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local building and safety codes.
• Ability to interpret and critically review one-line diagrams, construction drawings, specifications, engineering studies, calculations, equipment submittals, test reports, and commissioning documentation.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to evaluate alternatives based on safety, reliability, maintainability, operational impact, life-cycle value, cost, schedule, and institutional risk.
• Demonstrated leadership, organizational, prioritization, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead consultants, contractors, multidisciplinary project teams, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, budgets, and competing demands while maintaining accountability for project outcomes.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to develop, maintain, and deliver project documentation, reports, financial analyses, training materials, and project presentations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, project management software, computerized maintenance and facility management systems, and other business-related software applications.
• Knowledge of process improvement, quality assurance, inventory control, and operational best practices applicable to facilities, infrastructure, and capital project delivery.
Physical Requirements:
The employee must possess the physical capability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Requirements include:
• Sitting and working at a computer for extended periods.
• Frequent travel between project sites and university facilities.
• Prolonged standing and walking significant distances within and between buildings.
• Bending and climbing stairs, ladders, or scaffolding.
• Accessing electrical rooms, mechanical areas, equipment spaces, roofs, utility areas, and active construction sites.
• Working in confined spaces and at heights greater than 30 feet when required.
• Working in environments subject to extreme temperatures and other conditions normally associated with construction sites and facility infrastructure
Salary Pay Range: $67,070 – $87,190
