Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care Department, is seeking a Researcher Associate to join the team. As a Researcher Associate, this intermediate-level position will require you to independently conduct more complex studies and analyses, contributing to the advancement of research projects. With greater autonomy, you will design experiments, interpret data, and collaborate with senior researchers to develop and refine research protocols. Your role may also include mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve contact with research collaborators, research animals, and/or specimens.

General Responsibilities

As a Researcher Associate, this intermediate-level position will require you to independently conduct more complex studies and analyses, contributing to the advancement of research projects. With greater autonomy, you will design experiments, interpret data, and collaborate with senior researchers to develop and refine research protocols. Your role may also include mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Animals Rearing, Healthcare Facility Operations, responsibilities include implementing specialized feeding programs, monitoring animal health and behavior, coordinating veterinary services, administering medications and dietary supplements.

  2. Build and maintain strong relationships with Animal Resource Program through effective communication.

  3. National Therapeutics Resource Institute (NTRI) warehouse management.

  4. Manage daily warehouse and operational logistics to ensure efficient inventory control, accurate stock tracking, and smooth supply chain operations.

  5. Oversee stock receiving, storage, order fulfillment, and distribution activities while maintaining high standards of quality control, organization, and workplace safety.

  6. Animal Histopathology Tissue Processing Support.

  7. Support preclinical research studies through the collection, processing, preservation, and organization of biological specimens from animal models.

  8. Perform tissue harvesting and histological sample preparation using standard laboratory techniques to ensure high-quality specimens for morphological and pathological analyses.

  9. Maintain accurate specimen records and improved laboratory inventory systems to enhance data accessibility, sample traceability, and workflow efficiency.

  10. Assistance Anesthesia Monitoring.

  11. Provide specialized technical support for preclinical research procedures involving animal models, including bronchoscopy, embryo transfer surgeries, and oocyte retrieval procedures.

  12. Assist veterinary and research teams in maintaining procedural efficiency, monitoring animal health, and ensuring compliance with animal welfare and research protocols.

  13. Manage anesthesia administration support, intraoperative monitoring, and post-operative recovery care to promote successful research outcomes and animal well-being.

  14. Specialized Animal Breeding Colony Management.

  15. Support and coordinate specialized breeding programs for reproductive and translational research studies, including embryo transfer initiatives and colony management.

  16. Oversee neonatal care, animal welfare monitoring, identification procedures, and developmental tracking to ensure healthy colony growth and successful research outcomes.

  17. Maintain detailed records and collaborate with veterinary and research teams to support breeding efficiency, animal health, and regulatory compliance.

  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

Hourly Range: $19.80- $ 32.15

Bachelor's degree in a related field OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Candidates with experience working with ferret models are preferred..
