CLINICAL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATE

General Responsibilities:
The Student Counseling Services team is seeking a dedicated mental health professional to provide counseling and psychological services to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. This position delivers evidence-based individual, couples, and group counseling to support students experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, substance use, relationship challenges, and other mental health issues. The counselor will also provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, case management, consultation, and outreach services that promote student well-being and academic success. In addition to serving the general student population, this position has a specialized focus on supporting students living in UAB's residential communities. The counselor will collaborate with campus partners to address the unique mental health needs of residential students and help increase access to mental health services through outreach, consultation, prevention programming, and clinical support. Responsibilities may include maintaining an adjusted work schedule one to two days per week during the fall and spring semesters to accommodate late afternoon and early evening appointment availability for on-campus residents. Additional responsibilities include developing and delivering presentations, workshops, and psychoeducational programs; consulting with students, faculty, and staff; participating in campus initiatives that promote mental health and suicide prevention; and contributing to the university's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment. The ideal candidate will be passionate about serving diverse student populations, skilled in crisis assessment and intervention, and committed to advancing student mental health through both direct clinical services and campus-wide prevention efforts.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Direct service activities to students in individuals, couples and group settings.
2. Provides client intakes, assessments and crisis interventions.
3. Deliver program development and outreach activities, including presentations, training and psycho-education.

5. Provide consultation services to faculty, staff and students.
6. Serves on departmental, division or campus-wide committees, research and evaluation activities of Counseling Services.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Pay Range: $47,665 – $61,965

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree in a related field required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
• Clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for college-aged and adult populations.
• Suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
• Evidence-based counseling approaches for depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and eating disorders.
• Group counseling and psychoeducational program development.
• Case management and clinical documentation.
• Mental health outreach, training, and presentation facilitation.
• Experience conducting and interpreting clinical assessments to inform treatment planning.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse, underserved, and marginalized populations.
• Sound clinical judgment and ability to make decisions in acute and emergent situations.
• Collaboration and teamwork across multidisciplinary settings.
• Adaptability and creativity in developing mental health programming and outreach initiatives.

• Ability to build rapport and establish therapeutic relationships with students.
