Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Immunology Institute seeks a Research Scientist with advanced (PhD preferred) training in immunology to support immunology-focused research programs, immunology education for UAB investigators and trainees, and education efforts. This role focuses on writing reports and preparing presentations and summaries for experts in the field with content focused on immunology and biomedical research. This individual will work with faculty and trainees in the Immunology Institute to develop research and education initiatives that build connections among researchers, trainees, clinicians, and the broader Birmingham community. The ideal candidate has advanced training in immunology, is an excellent scientific writer and editor, can identify key topics for scientific workshops and symposia, organize scientific events and educational programs, write scientific reports and summaries for experts in the field and stakeholders, bring creativity to science education, and is passionate about advancing health, well-being, and the impact of translational research. Working with the oversight of the UAB HSOM Communications team, this individual will devote 20% effort to manage the institute website, newsletter, and social media content. This position is well suited for individuals who wish to remain actively engaged in research and science beyond the bench and contribute to the mission of UAB Medicine.

General Responsibilities

A Research Scientist conducts advanced studies in a specific field, applying specialized knowledge to drive research projects. This role involves data analysis, interpretation of results, and contribution to scientific literature. The position requires collaboration with peers and adherence to established protocols, with moderate autonomy and responsibility for project deliverables. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Scientific Writing 30%: Utilize training, knowledge and expertise in the field to summarize external scientific research and public health findings for researchers at UAB. Summarize UAB immunology research findings and highlight investigators for the UAB community. Assist UAB investigators to write, edit and summarize immunology content for inclusion in UAB grant applications, manuscripts, abstracts and posters. Write, and edit, immunology-relevant manuscripts and reports for Immunology Institute.

  2. Education 30%: Utilize training, knowledge and expertise to develop educational content for UAB immunology investigators, faculty and trainees. Collaborate with the Undergraduate Immunology Program and Society, Graduate Immunology Society, the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) to organize and host education events (McWane, YMCA, schools, libraries). Review requests for support and education. Initiate activities to participate in educational opportunities within community organizations and schools.

  3. Build Research Collaborations 20%: Organize opportunities for basic scientists and clinicians to coalesce and initiate collaborations on multi-disciplinary themes. Interface with faculty and trainee members. Plan scientific events, develop meeting/symposia agendas for official events, symposia, workshops, seminars and education events. Assist with organizing and advertising programs and facilities.

  4. Communication 20%: Working directly with UAB Communications team, using UAB templates, maintain the Immunology Institute website. Manage and create content for the Institute's weekly newsletter. Design and distribute all Institute-related promotional materials, flyers, posters, graphs, videos for social media and websites. Working with UAB Communications team, ensure that all materials are in compliance and integrated with UAB, state and federal policies and procedures. Manage and create scientific content for the Immunology Institute's social media presence (e.g. LinkedIn). Submit media communications for Institute events and noteworthy news items through UAB eReporter, HSOM Medicine News and UAB Research Matters

  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $ 70,425- $ 114,440

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field and one (1) year of related experience OR Master s degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience OR Bachelor s degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • PhD in immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related life science field.

  • Prefer to see candidates with 2+ years of experience in a research lab.
