The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Emergency Med Chair Office, is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator I.
The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) is expanding coordinator support for federally sponsored research aimed at improving basic life support skills, specifically cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator use within the Birmingham community. Study participants will include lay community members residing in various neighborhoods across Birmingham, Alabama. The individual will be primarily responsible for coordinating and conducting day-to-day activities for these projects. General Responsibilities
To serve as coordinator for studies and provide support to other team members within the confines of the protocol as directed.
To support screening and participant eligibility determination, working with more senior team members to ensure compliance.
To conduct activities in accordance with the protocol, regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
To assist with the study life cycle from start-up to closure, i.e., collecting and recording data, recruiting and performing follow-up with participants, scheduling visits and assisting in coordination of lab and fieldwork.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Conducts all study activities in accordance with UAB Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocols and established Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
Coordinates day-to-day screening and enrollment activities, including initiating informed consent discussions and collecting baseline programmatic and research data.
Engages directly with community members through outreach and study participation activities.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and must attend community wellness and outreach events. These events typically occur during daytime hours but may occasionally take place during evenings and weekends.
The role also includes coordinating and actively participating in routine internal team meetings and attending quarterly partner network meetings.
Follows participants from enrollment through follow-up interviews.
Maintains study records, documentation, and secure electronic databases.
Ensures all administrative and regulatory research documents remain compliant with UAB IRB-approved protocols.
Organizes study data and project performance metrics for routine progress reporting to sponsors and the IRB.
Performs general clerical duties (e.g., scanning, routing messages).
Attends departmental research operations meetings and routine meetings with the Program Director and staff.
Works occasional evenings and weekends based on scheduled community outreach events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary Range: $43,890 - $71,320
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required.
Preferences
Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field with 1-2 years of experience in public health, social work, or clinical research preferred.
Preferred Skills/Education/Experience: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, Experience in community outreach and engagement, Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar data management tools, Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g., REDCap), Experience performing basic descriptive statistics and summarizing data for progress reports preferred
The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced research environment with a high degree of independence and accountability.
Strong communication and phone etiquette skills are required.
