Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ophthalmology, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Researcher to join their team. The Downs Lab at UAB is searching for a motivated, detail-oriented researcher that will manage and collect data in our colony of large nonhuman primates (NHPs).

General Responsibilities

As a Researcher, you will play a key role in driving scientific discovery by independently leading and executing research projects. This professional-level position demands a high degree of expertise and judgement in designing studies, analyzing data, and may involve assistants in publishing findings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and contribute to grant writing and securing funding for future research. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performing procedures in animals to collect ocular images and telemetry data.

  2. Calibrating pressure sensors via minor aseptic surgical procedures and anterior chamber cannulation.

  3. Post hoc image processing, database management, controlled substance management, supply management.

  4. Instrument maintenance, management, and sterilization.

  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $ 50,050- $ 65,000

Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor's degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required or High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Desired knowledge, skills and experience include prior work in a lab animal research facility, understanding of research animal regulations, understanding of controlled substance regulations and management, anesthesia management and intubation of NHPs, vitals monitoring, vessel cannulation, aseptic surgical techniques, suturing, and general computer skills.

  • The ideal candidate will have experience with NHPs, including behavior, anesthesia, and ocular imaging.
