Position Summary

The research program of Dr. Krishna Bhat in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UAB is accepting applications for a Researcher Associate to support research on Drosophila development/neurobiology. The technician will maintain fly stocks, assist with genetic crosses and routine molecular biology, and help with day-to-day lab organization. This position is ideal for candidates interested in gaining strong research experience in a productive Drosophila lab.

General Responsibilities

As a Researcher Associate, this intermediate-level position will require you to independently conduct more complex studies and analyses, contributing to the advancement of research projects. With greater autonomy, you will design experiments, interpret data, and collaborate with senior researchers to develop and refine research protocols. Your role may also include mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Maintain Drosophila stocks, set up and score genetic crosses, and manage fly food preparation.

  2. Perform routine assays (e.g. fecundity, lifespan, behavioral assays) as required by ongoing projects.

  3. Carry out basic molecular biology (DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, genotyping, gel electrophoresis).

  4. Assist with sample preparation for microscopy and/or biochemistry (dissection, fixation, immunostaining, Western blot sample prep, etc.).

  5. Collect, record, and organize experimental data.

  6. Help maintain lab inventory, order consumables, and ensure proper storage and labeling of reagents and stocks.

  7. Follow institutional safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized working environment.

  8. Participate in lab meetings and communicate experimental progress and issues to the supervisor.

  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Hourly Range: $ 19.80- $23.00

Qualifications

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field OR Associate's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, Neuroscience, or related field.

  • Hands on experience in a research lab performing basic molecular biology and/or cell/organismal work.

  • Familiarity with Drosophila handling (sorting, anesthetizing, setting crosses) or a strong willingness to learn quickly.

  • Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation (e.g. Excel, GraphPad, image analysis software as applicable).

Key Skills

  • Ability to follow standard protocols accurately and to keep detailed, legible records.

  • Good organizational skills, reliability, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
