Electrician Journeyperson – Campus Maintenance

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Position Summary

The Electrician Journeyperson independently performs a wide range of skilled electrical work across campus facilities. This includes the installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of electrical systems, equipment, and components to ensure safe and reliable operation. The role requires applying journeyperson‑level expertise to troubleshoot issues, interpret electrical plans and codes, and support campus maintenance needs with minimal supervision.

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and components across campus facilities.

  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure compliance with industry standards, electrical codes, and UAB safety requirements.

  • Diagnoses electrical issues, troubleshoots system failures, and implements effective solutions to maintain operational efficiency.

  • Assists in training and mentoring apprentice electricians, promoting adherence to best practices and safety procedures.

  • Maintains accurate documentation of repairs, inspections, work orders, and compliance records; attends safety meetings and required training.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, components, and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical diagrams.

  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in fast‑paced or urgent situations.

  • Ability to work an on‑call schedule, including weekends and holidays, as needed to support campus operations.

  • Skilled in diagnosing electrical issues and implementing effective solutions with minimal supervision.

  • Knowledge of national, state, and local electrical codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.

  • Ability to use electrical testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.

  • Must be flexible, highly motivated, and able to adapt to changing priorities and work environments.

  • Effective communication skills to interact with team members, apprentices, and other campus departments.

  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation, work orders, and compliance records.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Hourly Pay Range:

$21.80 - $30.33 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience.

o Preferred Qualifications:

· Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Electrical Systems, Electrical Technology, or a related field.

o Licensure Requirements:

· State of Alabama (or reciprocal state) Journeyman or Master Electrician (MC) license.

· City of Birmingham Journeyman or Master Electrician (MC) license (required at time of employment).

Independent Judgement/Problem Solving:

Carries out duties within the scope of University policies and procedures. Analyzes problems, adapts guidelines, and exercises independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that impact policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to the supervisor.

Customer Service Relationships:

Handles challenging customer situations with tact and diplomacy. Uses advanced interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships. Finds creative solutions to meet customer needs.

MVR (Motor Vehicle Record):

Driving record must meet University underwriting guidelines, including:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license

  • Minimum age of 21

  • At least three years of driving experience

  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Physical Requirements:

Must possess the physical ability, with or without mechanical assistance, to safely perform job duties, including:

  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

  • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.

· Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

· Working in a healthcare environment, confined spaces, and extreme temperatures

· Wearing required PPE, including respirators and SCBA

Work Schedule:

Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the University and department.
