Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT-UTILITIES & ENERGY MGMT to be in responsible charge of the Utilities Energy Management (UEM) unit, to plan, to manage, to administer, to organize, to develop and to supervise those resources which support, energize, enable, operate, preserve, sustain, protect, and optimize the central energy plants distribution network, related contracts management for purchased utilities, which serve UAB affiliated units. steam, chilled water, natural gas, domestic water, industrial water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, electrical distribution, and communications/ data networks). To coordinate and appropriately interface with those utilities and systems controlled by other sources such as municipalities, utility companies, other UAB partners (information technology / data physical security for example). To effectively manage and document performance of all UEM functions. UAM units shall incorporate sustainable practices as integral and essential principles of performance and operations. UAM units shall consistently integrate total cost of ownership considerations and environmental stewardship into daily and long-term decisions and actions. To facilitate and assure meaningful and consistent communication between the UEM operational units and planning, design, construction, sustainability, environmental health safety, facilities administration and similar entities. To provide input into design and construction standards, to engage, and review design documents as an integral part of the design process as the client, steward and facility manager of proposed new UEM infrastructure and upgrades to remain current. To coordinate with City, County and State entities routinely on matters of common impact and interest. To communicate with top-level management throughout the University on a regular basis in order to coordinate and process essential operational data into practice. To generate, communicate, prioritize and operationalize strategic plans for UAM and to provide regular updates and performance indicators as they relate to the responsibilities of the UAM organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide Long Term Planning.
- Provide infrastructure management and oversee UAM projects, engineering work, and programs that interface with other departments.
- Direct the operation and maintenance of UAB's three Centralized Enterprise Chilled Water plants, multiple de-centralized plants and District Steam plant.
- Evaluate current plans to revise to ensure reliability, sustainability and operations in the development of strategic plans to achieve enterprise goals.
- Coordinate and maintain documentation for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of all major equipment and systems.
- Interview, select, promote and evaluate applicants, employees and supervisors for UEM department.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
(Annual Salary: $146,405 - $237,905)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required (ABET-accredited institution, preferred) along with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible engineering and utilities management experience, including executive-level leadership of large, multidisciplinary organizations and management of teams of twenty-five (25) or more professional, technical, and skilled trade employees. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification is desired.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current guidelines include possession of a valid driver's license issued in the United States, at least 21 years of age and at least 3 years of driving experience. Must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
