The Electrician Senior plays a critical role in maintaining and repairing electrical systems in high-risk, high-visibility areas such as ICUs, surgical suites, and other essential hospital spaces. This position supports patient safety and uninterrupted care by ensuring electrical systems remain reliable, compliant, and operational at all times.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Operations & Maintenance
· Performs advanced electrical maintenance and repair work in critical care and high-profile hospital areas.
· Troubleshoots and resolves complex electrical system failures to minimize disruption to patient care.
· Prioritizes urgent repairs and coordinates work in sensitive hospital environments.
· Maintains detailed documentation of inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
Compliance & Safety
· Ensures compliance with electrical codes, safety protocols, and hospital standards.
· Participates in safety meetings, required training, and an on-call rotation, including weekends and holidays.
Leadership & Technical Support
· Trains and mentors apprentice and journeyman electricians to support skill development and safe work practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED and six (6) years of related experience is required. Associates degree OR
technical diploma in Electrical Systems, Electrical Technology or a related field is preferred.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
· State of Alabama (or reciprocal state) Master Card or Journeyman license, plus
· NICET FAS II, plus
· City of Birmingham Journeyman or Master Card license prior to employment, plus
· ASHE Health Care Physical Environment Worker Certification required within six months of employment, plus
· Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current guidelines include possession of a valid driver's license issued in the United States, at least 21 years of age and at least 3 years of driving experience. Must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
· Expert knowledge of electrical codes and hospital electrical infrastructure.
· Experience working with high-voltage systems and hospital-grade electrical systems.
· Ability to work an on-call schedule, including weekends and holidays.
· Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, and advanced troubleshooting techniques.
· Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment in a healthcare environment.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to interact professionally with staff, patients, vendors, and leadership from diverse backgrounds.
· Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and understand the responsibilities associated with working in clinical and patient care areas.
· Demonstrated ability to remain effective and calm when responding to emergency, critical, unusual, or potentially hazardous situations.
· Customer-focused mindset with the ability to prioritize service needs and minimize disruption to hospital operations.
· Ability to manage and document work orders using a handheld device or computerized maintenance system.
· Must be able to safely perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:
o Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
o Standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing for extended periods throughout the workday.
o Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding and working at heights exceeding 30 feet.
o Walking significant distances between and within hospital buildings and campus locations.
o Working in confined or restricted spaces.
o Working in varying environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and areas with active electrical systems.
o Wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) (requires maintaining a clean-shaven face for proper fit).
o Working safely in a healthcare environment, including around patients, staff, sensitive equipment, and emergency situations
Compensation:
Hourly pay range for this classification: $27.85; $36.20; $45.25
· Starting offers will not necessarily begin at the midpoint or maximum of the range. Offers are determined by relevant experience (both UAB/UAB Medicine and external), pay grade minimums, internal equity, departmental budget, UAB salary guidelines, and the salaries of incumbents in the classification.

Work Schedule:
· Designated essential personnel; required to report during emergency situations, including inclement weather
