Description
The Preparator at AEIVA plays a central role in bringing exhibitions to life, ensuring that every artwork is handled, installed, and presented to the highest professional standards. This hands-on position manages all aspects of artwork and exhibition installation, including fabrication, lighting, framing, packing, and technical support for AEIVA's diverse program of 8-10 exhibitions annually. Working closely with AEIVA staff, the Preparator oversees physical transport, storage, and on-site logistics, while also supporting events and programs that connect exhibitions to campus and community audiences. This role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative spirit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute the installation and deinstallation of AEIVA's annual exhibition program.
- Construct and fabricate exhibition elements such as pedestals, shelves, temporary walls, and other display structures.
- Manage exhibition lighting, including fixture focusing, aiming, and maintenance.
- Prepare and repair walls, including painting, patching, and sanding.
- Coordinate with UAB Facilities and outside contractors for specialized fabrication or technical services.
- Assist with the safe receipt, unpacking, and packing of artworks for incoming and outgoing shipments.
- Transport artworks locally, regionally, and nationally, following museum best practices.
- Design and build crates; pack works in a variety of media to industry standards.
- Serve as technical lead for AEIVA exhibitions and as liaison for UAB Center for the Arts technical needs.
- Produce and install exhibition vinyl graphics.
- Perform fine art framing and mounting as needed.
- Collaborate with curators on exhibition layout and design.
- Coordinate with UAB Center for the Arts, Health Safety, and Facilities on operational logistics.

- Manage storage areas, track equipment inventory, and maintain organized workspaces.

Salary range: $17-$22
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Museum Studies, Design, or a closely related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
