Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a FINANCIAL AID SPECIALIST II to serve as the primary counselor to students in undergraduate or graduate school as well as serving as the faculty contact for the schools. To establish program criteria, awarding loans and scholarships and ensuring student compliance with federal regulations, to conduct financial aid orientations for schools; including after-hours presentations, as well as maintaining weekly office hours at the school during certain times of the year. To manage the alternative/private loan process and serve as the in-office contact for various lenders.
Responsibilities:
1. Assists in coordinating and administering student financial aid programs with responsibility for assigned aspects of the operation such as file management, computer operations, publications, scheduling and/or other programs. Counsels students and parents regarding financial aid procedures and policies.
2. May serve as Financial Aid liaison for the School of Optometry, School of Dentistry and/or School of Medicine including serving as the direct point of contact, interviews, orientations, committees and posting scholarships.
3. Processes, verifies and awards financial aid to recipients; serves on the financial committees and make professional judgment decisions as needed.
4. Manages the alternative student loan certification and disbursement process. Requires daily processing of reports, posting loan deposits and certifying loan requests from lenders. Works closely with student accounting on these issues and monitors and/or returns undisbursed funds to lenders. Counsels students on all aspects of the alternative loan process.
5. Counsels students and parents on financial aid matters by phone, email and in person; processes loan awards and updates to financial aid awards; processes Title IV reductions and loan cancellation requests, serves on financial committees, and presents financial aid at various undergraduate and graduate student orientations and freshman experience classes.
6. Maintains current knowledge of federal regulations obtained through regular training and communication with other aid professionals.
7. Participates in and acts as lead to other staff members in awarding of financial aid.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.
(Hourly Rate: $16.50 - $18.62)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
