CONSTRUCTION & HEAVY MACHINE OPERATOR

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Description

To perform a wide variety of construction, demolition, and landscaping tasks requiring the use and

operation of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles including bulldozers, tractors, front-end loaders,

and bobcats. To perform concrete, asphalt work, welding and fabrication. To respond to routine,

emergency, and unusual service requests and support the campus during weather events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS TO INCLUDE:

· Performs a variety of construction, demolition, and landscaping duties requiring the operation of

commercial vehicles including dump trucks with a gross weight rating or gross combination weight

of 26,001 pounds or more. Operates a variety of heavy equipment including dump tractors, ditch

witches, bobcats, small cranes, forklifts, bulldozers, and backhoes. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to schedule.

· Builds concrete forms for curbs, gutters, patios, decks, barricades, walls, and other structures. Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete using power and manual equipment. Inspects, assesses, and eliminates hazards, ensuring sidewalks, ramps, and building entrances meet ADA compliance standards.

· Assists campus customers and other maintenance personnel with special projects which could include demolition, excavation, welding, and fabricating specialized tools, job aides, shelving, and piping. Lifts and transports heavy objects and dumpsters. Assists with moving and installation of large building mechanical equipment.

· Constructs, maintains and repairs asphalt roads, driveways, and sidewalks using heavy road-building equipment such as road graders, asphalt rollers, and asphalt spreaders. Grades and maintains gravel lots.

· Prepares construction sites by clearing landscaping, digging trenches, installing pipes, and removing rubble and debris.

· Performs demolition and renovation work on buildings, sidewalks, roads, driveways, ramps, curbing, piping, walls, and other structures.

· Performs landscaping tasks including removing, cuttings, and transplanting trees, excavating, cultivating, hauling, bush hogging, grading, and ditch digging. Installs drainage pipes using laser guidance and pipe-laying equipment.

· Prepares the campus for inclement weather events by filling and placing sandbags, spreading salt, sand, etc. Supports campus operations during weather events and assists with clean-up and debris removal.

· Follows all safety protocols while maintaining and operating equipment to create a safe work environment and eliminate safety hazards. Attends and actively participates in department meetings and ongoing training. Pursues specialized training and certifications to stay abreast of industry changes and to advance expertise.

· Interacts with customers, visitors, students, coworkers, and others in a friendly, respectful, helpful, and professional manner.

· Follows all safety protocols while maintaining and operating equipment to create a safe work environment and eliminate safety hazards. Attends and actively participates in department meetings and ongoing training. Pursues specialized training and certifications to stay abreast of industry changes and to advance expertise.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

· Demonstrated ability to use a variety of hand and power tools

· Ability to operate heavy construction equipment

· Demonstrated skills in basic mechanical aptitude, trade mathematics and communications and electronics

· Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate corrective and preventative action

· Must be able to work independently and collaboratively as needed

Starting Hourly Rate: $18.85 - $27.56 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30p.m. (subject to change to meet the needs of the University).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required.

MVR:

Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed with a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement from the State of Alabama required. Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

PERSONAL:

Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:

· Lifting, moving and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

· Perform tasks requiring climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and extensive walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.

· Working in the rain and in unfavorable weather conditions, hot, cold, wet, etc.

· Working in confined spaces

· Working within extreme temperature ranges
