UAB Facilities Hospital Maintenance is seeking a skilled HVAC PM Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems. In this role, you’ll help ensure safe, reliable, and energy-efficient operation of hospital equipment and building automation systems.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Reads, interprets, and applies blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules, and manufacturers’ operating or maintenance specifications for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC systems, and building structures.
Assists other maintenance personnel as needed, including Electricians, Plumbers, Maintenance Technicians, and other skilled technicians.
Responds to routine and emergency maintenance requests from hospital building occupants.
Operates, adjusts, installs, and maintains computerized energy management and control systems for electronic, direct digital, and pneumatic control systems, including HVAC equipment, chillers, boilers, and related systems.
Conducts routine and preventive maintenance on heating systems (steam, gas, electric, and hot water), VAV boxes, packaged air conditioning units, heat pumps, reheat units, air handling units, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, air compressors, and other equipment.
Maintains and repairs refrigeration systems, including chillers, freezers, ice machines, air dryers, and dehumidifiers, while ensuring compliance with EPA regulations for refrigerant handling.
Measures, calculates, balances, and adjusts airflow (CFM) for air handling systems.
Calibrates and maintains automatic temperature controls, controllers, variable speed drives, valve and damper actuators, and boiler fire control systems.
Utilizes CFC and HCFC refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment and maintain accurate service records in compliance with EPA standards.
Utilizes handheld devices to manage and document work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
Attends required safety and departmental meetings and completes all assigned training on time.
Compensation & Work Details:
Starting Offer Range: $20.80 - $27.00 per hour
Full Classification Range: $20.80 - $27.00 - $33.80 per hour
Determination: Final offer based on experience, internal equity, budget, and UAB guidelines
Essential Personnel: This position is designated as essential personnel and is required to report to work during emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather), regardless of University closure. Employees should be prepared to travel to work during inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of their role in critical situations.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: Graduate from an accredited Technical School of HVAC and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirements.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
Currently certified with a Section 608 Technician Type I, II, or III Certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) required.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Strong ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair HVAC/R systems and associated controls.
Experience reading and interpreting technical documents such as blueprints and maintenance manuals.
Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines.
Commitment to providing excellent service and responding to maintenance needs promptly.
Ability to work an on-call work schedule, if needed.

· Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator and other personal protective equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), to include:
o Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
o Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.
o Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distance between and within buildings on campus.
o Working in confined spaces.
o Working within extreme temperature ranges.
