Description
Ready to use your mechanical skills to support hospital operations in a meaningful way? UAB Facilities Hospital Maintenance is hiring a Pneumatic Tube Mechanic to keep the pneumatic tube system running smoothly for staff and patient care areas throughout the hospital. You will perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure fast, reliable system performance every day.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical instruments and control devices.
Maintains and monitors BAS and HVAC control systems.
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on control systems and instrumentation. Responds to work orders and service calls involving system diagnostics and repairs. Documents all maintenance and repair activities accurately and in a timely manner.
Assists with commissioning of new equipment and systems, ensuring proper operation and integration with existing infrastructure.
Collaborates with engineering, IT, and external contractors on control system projects and upgrades.
Ensures compliance with hospital policies, Joint Commission requirements, NFPA codes, and relevant local/state regulations.
Maintains inventory of instrumentation parts and requests replacements as needed.
Participates in on-call rotation and responds to emergency maintenance needs.
Attends all required safety training sessions and mandatory meetings; maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry safety standards. Completes all training in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Graduate from an accredited vocational or technical school in a two (2) year Electronic, HVAC, or
Electrical program and six (6) years of related experience is required. Work experience may substitute for
education requirement.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
ASHE Senior Mechanic Evaluation and Certification for Health Care (SRMECH) Certification required within six months of employment.
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current guidelines include possession of a valid driver's license issued in the United States, at least 21 years of age and at least 3 years of driving experience. Must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and written technical documents
- Ability to use personal computer, related software and familiarity with industrial computer systems, motor control. PLCs and DCSs
- Excellent communication and customer services skills
- Demonstrates ability to develop collaborative relationships and promote teamwork with co-workers and other departments.
- Knowledge of safety standards and guidelines (NFPA, Joint Commission, Manufacturer, UAB, and Safety)
- Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities to include:
o Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
o Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet
o Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings in the hospital
o Working in confined spaces
o Working within extreme temperature ranges
o Ability to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Compensation & Work Details:
Starting Offer Range: $29.25 - $37.50 per hour
Full Classification Range: $29.25 - $38.00 - $47.55 per hour
Determination: Final offer based on experience, internal equity, budget, and UAB guidelines
Work Schedule: Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. (Subject to change to meet the needs of the Hospital). In addition to base rate, will be compensated for shift differential.
Essential Personnel: This position is designated as essential personnel and is required to report to work during emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather), regardless of University closure. Employees should be prepared to travel to work during inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of their role in critical situations.
