Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a SHOP ADMINISTRATOR in the School of Engineering. This position plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises shop activities. Works as lead machinist for shop active in design and fabrication of items device, making tooling, and making materials recommendations for projects. Ensures materials and equipment are available and serviceable. Provides logistical and technical assistance to other internal organizations and conducts equipment and safety training. Keeps faculty and staff advised of changes in procedures and equipment and trains and assists faculty, staff, and students in shop equipment operations. Monitors supply levels and prepares purchase orders for supplies, parts, and new equipment; conducts vendor research and evaluations; records time and materials usage for projects fabricated for other departments. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate publications and communications/interaction with subject matter experts. May have budget responsibilities. May be responsible for a small staff, assigning, prioritizing, supervising and inspecting the work performed by subordinates. May interview, hire, train, evaluate, discipline and discharge subordinate personnel.

Responsibilities:

1. Supervises shop activities including scheduling, safety, project completion, and faculty/student operation of machine tools; calibrates, maintains and repairs shop equipment.

2. Works as lead machinist active in design and fabrication of items and tooling. Provides fabrication and assembly of custom designed parts and prototypes for UAB faculty, staff, and students, and for external parties where appropriate.

3. Provides technical information and assistance; conducts equipment and safety training; makes design, tooling, and materials recommendations for projects; keeps faculty, staff, and students advised of changes, new procedures and equipment. Develops and offers short training courses in machine tool operation.

4. Works proactively with School of Engineering Senior Design Project instructors to assure workable scheduling of student jobs and/or access to machine tool training and use.

5. Monitors supply levels and prepares purchase orders for supplies, parts, new equipment; conducts vendor research and evaluations; records time and materials usage for projects fabricated for other departments.

6. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate publications and communications/interaction with subject matter experts.

7. Works with the SOE Associate Dean for Research and Director of Administration and Fiscal affairs to develop a yearly budget.

8. Maintains a work log and billing schedule to be filed once a month with the Associate Dean for Research and the Director of Administration and Fiscal Affairs.

9. Acts in a caring and courteous manner towards all patients, guests, visitors, students, staff, and faculty.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

(Annual Salary: $47,665 - $77,455)

Qualifications

Associate's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required eight (8) years of related experience preferred. Machinist apprenticeship is desirable. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
