RESIDENCE LIFE COORDINATOR

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

General Responsibilities:

To support the student experience on campus including the assimilation of new students to UAB, the enforcement of policies and procedures, living with a roommate adjustments, conflict mediation and resolution, conduct adjudication, crisis response, and overall safety and security of students living in one of UAB's residence halls. To provide day-to-day support and engagement of undergraduate students impacting academic success, social involvement with peers, and overall satisfaction of the college experience which has implications for retention and persistence for over 3,200 undergraduate students living on campus.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Supports the execution of educational priorities and learning outcomes through strategy implementation and employs residential curriculum philosophy as a framework for student and staff development to facilitate intentional connections with residential students and stakeholders.

  2. Provides daily administration including oversight for the implementation of health and safety inspections, lobby desk coverage for security purposes, follow-up on maintenance work orders, room changes, room consolidation, check-in/out, and serves as liaison with cleaning and maintenance staff to oversee the general upkeep of the hall.

  3. Recruits, selects, trains, and evaluates Resident Assistants and Graduate Assistants. Provides staff training and development opportunities and coordinates work assignments and special projects.

  4. Collaborates with relevant campus partners to provide academic and interest-based housing; conducts assessments to ensure themed housing areas meet programmatic and learning objectives.

  5. Serves as a Student Conduct Officer in collaboration with the office of Community Standards and Student Accountability; meets with students to review policy violations and/or inappropriate behavior. Reinforces appropriate behaviors and expectations with residential students; develops supportive, responsible and civil community environments. Maintains effective communication with the office of Community Standards and Student Accountability to ensure adherence to adjudication procedures outlined in the Student Conduct Code.

  6. Serves as first-line crisis responder through on-call rotation with other professional and graduate assistant staff. Follows up with residents through academic, personal, and social counseling/advising or appropriate and timely referrals to university support services; serves as a student advocate.

  7. Works with the Student Housing and Residence Life's international student population to support adjustments to campus life and connections with appropriate resources.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Range: $44,000

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field and one (1) year of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences:

  • Interested candidates must have at least one year of progressive experience and working knowledge of Student Development Theory.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to navigate the academic environment and build relationships with faculty, staff morale, emergency management, and conflict resolution while maintaining efficiency in daily or routine tasks is critical.

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in managing multiple levels of professional and student staff, strategic planning, program and outcomes assessment, crisis response, and developing and sustaining academic, interest, and faculty-led learning communities.

  • The ability to shift priorities quickly and make sound decisions with limited information is essential to succeed in this position.
