Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources Shared Services – HSOM/HSF will create and execute the people strategy for the School of Medicine (SOM) and the Health Services Foundation (HSF). This role includes oversight of organizational design, competency coaching, career development, internal movement, retention strategies, talent acquisition strategies, and succession planning.
The Director will strategically plan, implement, direct, and maintain HR-related activities across a portfolio of SOM and HSF departments. This position serves as a trusted resource to departments, centers, and programs, ensuring that HR policies, procedures, and programs are consistently administered, aligned with organizational goals, and compliant with professional standards and institutional requirements.
The Director will lead a team of HR professionals in delivering collaborative and effective HR services to faculty and staff, while also leading the SOM Faculty Council and serving as liaison between the Dean’s Office and the Provost Office Faculty Affairs. This leader will also work closely with UAB Medicine Leadership to establish effective, efficient HR processes.
Key Responsibilities
· Develop and implement people strategies, including organizational design, succession planning, career development, competency coaching, and retention initiatives.
· Oversee HR administration, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and faculty appointment/promotion/tenure processes.
· Partner with academic leaders on faculty recruitment, retention, evaluation, and development.
· Provide guidance to departmental chairs and administrators on HR strategy, faculty affairs, and compliance with policies and regulations.
· Lead the SOM Faculty Council; oversee promotion and tenure guidelines and elections; manage faculty personnel actions in compliance with institutional policies.
· Serve as liaison between SOM leadership, UAB Medicine, UAB Central Administration, and the Provost’s Office Faculty Affairs.
· Direct HR systems/process improvement initiatives, including ERP/HRIS implementations.
· Supervise a team of 4–10 HR professionals.
· Ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and professional HR standards.
· Generate HR and faculty-related reports as needed.
Qualifications
· Education: Master's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
· Experience: At least eight (8) years of related HR experience required (work experience may not substitute for education).

· HR leadership and people management (leading HR teams, cross-functional HR service delivery)
· Faculty HR administration (recruitment, promotion & tenure, faculty affairs)
· Talent management and organizational development (workforce planning, succession planning, retention strategies)
· Recruitment and staffing strategy (enterprise sourcing, compliance with EEO/AA requirements)
· HR systems and change management (ERP/HRIS implementation, process redesign)
· Strategic HR partnership with senior leaders (advising deans, executives, department chairs)
· Policy and compliance oversight in higher education or healthcare environments
· HR analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision-making
