DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

General Responsibilities:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a Director of Development to develop and implement strategies, direction, coordination, and management of major gift activities for the School of Engineering. This will include identifying, cultivating, and successfully soliciting alumni, individuals, corporations, and foundations for major gifts to support their assigned School of Engineering educational, research, and community outreach programs.

This position will be expected to meet defined performance metrics related to development activities. All major gift activities must be documented in CRM. The Director of Development must be able to function as an integral part of a team of fundraising professionals in the Office of Advancement to design and implement successful fundraising programs that include annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts to maximize private gift support.

The position will also lead and direct an alumni affairs specialist in the School of Engineering. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Development and coordinates daily activities with the Dean and other University officials.

After-hours work and travel is required for this position.

This position is hybrid eligible after the probationary period.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Raise major gifts from multiple donor groups (corporates, foundations, alumni, faculty, and community).

  • Build and manage a portfolio of high-worth prospects.

  • Work with Dean, Department chairs, and faculty to identify potential sources of private gift support and develop appropriate strategies to generate major gifts to support the School.

  • Manage an overall strategic vision for the development and alumni office including developing and implementing fundraising strategies and alumni engagement programs and activities.

  • Function as an integral part of the Advancement Office team by collaborating with Annual Giving, Regional Giving, Donor Relations and Engagement, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Planned Giving and others to grow fundraising opportunities and steward donors to the School.

  • Manage a high-functioning development and alumni team including leading and coaching/developing an alumni affairs specialist in the School.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Range:

This position is assigned to Wage Grade W.G380 (Job Code BG201D2) with a full Compensation - approved range of $70,425 – $114,440 annually (midpoint $91,550).

Final offers will be made within this grade range based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, and the department’s budgeted amount for the role. Applicants whose stated salary expectations fall outside the posted grade range may not be considered.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business or a related field.

Related fields include (but are not limited to):

  • Sales

Experience: Five (5) years of related experience required. Two years’ major gift experience preferred.

Related experience may include:

  • Major Gift Fundraising

  • Strategic Development Planning

  • Higher Education or Nonprofit Advancement

  • Alumni Relations & Engagement

  • CRM & Donor Stewardship

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences:

  • Ability to conceive, plan and implement fundraising programs which focus on building internal and external relationships

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Advanced negotiation skills

  • Political acumen/social awareness

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to reconcile and resolve differences of opinion with maturity and good judgment

  • Experience in higher education

  • Strong organizational, process and planning skills
