Description
Responsibilities of the Academic Advisor III will include teaching a First Year Experience course and providing oversight for a student organization.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Selects academic advising practices that support student success. Creates and maintain a safe, equitable and inclusive environment that is responsive to the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. Applies the core values and theories relevant to academic advising. Adapts academic advising approaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Implements projects to achieve specific academic advising outcomes and ethical guidelines outlined by university and National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Understands the history and the role of academic advising in higher education. Understands the history and the role of academic advising in higher education.
2. Has advanced network of cross-campus relationships and resources. Assists academic unit with the interpretation of institutional regulations, policies, offerings and procedures. Creates education plans that are consistent with students’ aspirations, interests, strengths and values. Collaborates with other university offices in developing, disseminating and delivering content as appropriate. Implements the core values of the institution. Initiates career conversations with students. Provides a holistic approach to advising that connects to and supports the unit vision and mission. Applies legal guidelines of advising practices, including privacy regulations and confidentiality (i.e., Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)). Articulates the intent of general education, school/college and program requirements. Uses appropriate information sources and refers students to other resources when necessary.
3. Implements personal philosophy of academic advising and utilizes multiple advising techniques and styles. Creates rapport and maintains relationships with expert level of ability. Adapts academic advising approaches to meets the needs of a diverse student population. Facilitates problem solving, decision-making, meaning-making and goal setting. Engages in ongoing departmental/unit assessment and development of the advising practice. Implements equitable and inclusive strategies within academic advising practices. Provides a holistic approach to advising with multiple support resources. Communicates in a culturally inclusive and competent manner. Facilitates student appointments. Continues to develop both oral and written communication skills.
4. Delivers training to advisors within unit. Develops new programming and methods for working with students. Provides leadership within department/unit and UAB community (supervisor student workers or GAs, club/campus organization advisor, committee participation and leadership, etc.). Requires little to no direct supervision. Acts as a lead advisor for the school or unit and provides training to other academic advisors. Takes a lead role in recruitment/retention, outreach services and orientation. Assists departments with curriculum development (e.g., advice on course sequencing and new programs and concentrations). Leads group presentations and further develops communication skills and understanding of policies, procedures, etc. (e.g., orientation and UAB Days). Provides service to UAB and department/unit communities (e.g., Council of Academic Advisors committee).
5. Provides guidance and advice to students on course selection, course prerequisites, career planning and continuing higher education. Proactively identifies and provides support to students who are not meeting the academic expectations of the program and the university (i.e. warning, probation suspension). Contacts unregistered students for outreach and retention of students. Coordinates support services for students, including referrals to other offices as required. Assists with student recruitment, orientation, and retention (some evening and weekend work required). Serves on special committees as needed. Maintains accurate student information, records and adhere to confidentiality standards. Prepares special and recurring reports regarding status of students and/or assists with departments with course curriculum scheduling initiatives. Processes applications for degrees.
6. Continues proposal submission/presentation development for conferences, institutes, etc. Continues involvement with professional association(s) and campus Council of Academic Advisors (CAA). Clear advancement in knowledge, skills and abilities. Identifies area(s) of focus and expertise. Has pre-scheduled hours of professional development each year (i.e., coursework, conferences, etc.) Continue education (coursework, webinars). Attends any training in unit or offered at UAB level to increase knowledge and develop cross-campus colleague network. Seeks advice and mentorship from senior advisors and directors.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of institution history, mission, vision, values, and culture.
- Knowledge of institutional regulations, policies, offerings, and procedures.
- Knowledge of student body characteristics.
- Knowledge of unit’s curricula, policies, procedures, mission, and vision.
- Knowledge of how to create educational plans.
- Knowledge of and adherence to legal guidelines of advising, including privacy regulations and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of campus and community resources that support student success.
- Knowledge of academic advising technologies.
Annual Salary Range: $46,530 - $75,615
Qualifications
Master's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
