UAB Medicine has one of the country’s largest and busiest transplant programs, performing kidney, heart, liver, lung, pancreas, and bone marrow/HSC transplants, as well as multi-organ procedures. During the last half-century, the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute has completed more than 16,000 successful transplants and pioneered many changes, including groundbreaking research, new medicines, and innovative techniques that we in turn teach to others, serving Alabama and furthering our reputation in the field.
UAB’s Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Lab, the only one in Alabama, is among the largest and most respected of 200 similar laboratories in the United States. The HIL lab performs a variety of high-complexity tests and risk assessments to determine recipient and donor compatibility prior to transplant, as well as testing to monitor rejection post-transplant.
Compensation:
Pay Range: $24.05 - $39.10 hour
Job title and pay rate will be determined based on all applicable certification levels and previous laboratory work experience.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical science field required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Must obtain certification as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) within two (2) years of date of hire into position.

Job Description:
The lab performs crucial work around the clock, 365 days a year, and in demanding, time-sensitive circumstances. No transplant can be performed until the lab team identifies both the donor’s and the potential recipient’s histocompatibility antigens, known as human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), and then checks for predetermined anti-HLA antibodies. Under close supervision of at least one (1) year, to train in theory and methodology of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) to be able to perform the high complexity technical assays necessary to determine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) compatibility of transplant recipients and donors according to defined laboratory protocols. To be able to perform all testing exhibiting a clear understanding of the principles of the assays being performed; recognizing unusual or atypical results and the urgency in timely reporting of results. To consult supervisor as needed.
